Do you think fully automated robots will ever replace surgeons, just like robots replace some workers on car assembly lines? Obviously the technology is very far off, however there has been a lot of exciting work done in the field of robotics. If the technology is possible, do you think it will happen? Do you think the technology will be possible in the next 50 years?

The field of "robotics" currently applies to devices that can assist the surgeon (e.g. the da Vinci system for cardiac/GU procedures, which can help eliminate tremor, among other things).

You're thinking more of automated machines, a la Isaac Asimov. THAT sort of technology is still very far away.

It would be pretty sweet though😍 I think of this all the time... surgeons of the future in 50 years, waving hands in the air directing machines like a conductor.

I just think it is an interesting topic to discuss. I agree the technology is very far away. I was talking about fully automated robots like the "medical robots" in Star Wars. I wonder if a patient would choose that over a human surgeon.

There's some evidence from the current work being done that patients tend to prefer the human surgeon at outset, but a certain percentage will "cross-over" after learning more about it. But the majority still want the "old fashioned" way.

We would really have to integrate robots into many other areas of life to make patients comfortable with it in the operating room as well, IMHO.

Jesus christ. Maybe throw in a star trek reference or two to really up the geek level of this thread. Do you actually spend time thinking about this ****?

Calm down, Jackass. I was just using it as a reference/example. If you don't like a discussion, then don't log onto to SDN. You can spend the rest of the time being a jerk to people off line.

Don't be angry because you started a lame thread...try to learn from my criticism. I allready spend most of my day being a jerk to people off-line, this is how I relax. But don't worry, I'll be busy again soon then you can go back to posting all the ******ed threads you want.

Well then you have a pretty sad life.

Who the hell are you to judge what is a "lame" post? Can you please share with me some incredibly enlightening or interesting posts you have created. God it is jerks like you that make me hate medicine. I bet you are one of those "know it-all" over-aggressive (yet secretly very insecure) students that everyone else thinks is socially ******ed.

Yeah but its really weird to not have the surgeon standing next to the patient. All the way across the room is kind of creepy. Also I keep having this vision of the robot going HAL and having to seize the camera as it rams it into the liver.

To have automated surgeons will require major advances in 3 areas:

Neural networks
Image Recognition (likely done by neural networks)
Machine reliability.

Yes, yes I do...don't worry, you'll get there too some day if you decide to persue a general surgery residency. It's the nature of the beast.

I'm dynx. Nice to meet you. I can ID lame posts in the same way that I can ID lame questions and lame people. Some folks lack the ability to do this, I imagine that you suffer from that inability. Hence the lame post. It's natural to wonder how some people are so easily able to do things that you find so hard...I would tell you the ability will come with time but the truth is, it won't.

Can you please share with me some incredibly enlightening or interesting posts you have created.

Haven't created a thread in awhile...I don't feel the need to imortalize every half assed thought that pops into my head and clutter up what could be a productive forum. If it wasn't for me (and most other people) having this edit function built in, we'd all have to wade through idiotic "I wonder if amputations will ever be done by light-saber like devices" like threads that folks like you put up. but feel free to browse through my posting history, Im sure you could learn something

God it is jerks like you that make me hate medicine.

You flatter me. If I can convince you to go into another field so I don't have to listen to your useless prattle while I work that would be fantastic...I feel like Im really accomplishing something here after all.

I bet you are one of those "know it-all" over-aggressive (yet secretly very insecure) students that everyone else thinks is socially ******ed.

welcome to surgery...get a helmet.

Beautiful ownage there, dynx.

BTW, if there were these uber-skilled robosurgeons, what do you think would happen to the number of human surgeons employed? Exactly. So if you are thinking about being a surgeon one day, be very opposed to this idea, not excited by it... these metal summabitches are gunning for your job.

Well that is the point of my post. I am not excited about it and I don't know what you would assume that. I was simply asking a question that I thought would be interesting to discuss. You are right though, it would take over the jobs of surgeons which I am not excited about.

dynx, I have never met anyone who is quite a jerk like you so hopefully that will be the exception more then norm. You still have a sad life and if you feel the need to attack others online for no apparent reason and insult them then clearly it must stem from your own massive inferiority complex. I am sure you are just realizing that you are a complete loser in surgery and so you must log onto to SDN and insult others to make yourself feel better. If that is your deal, then I truly feel sorry for you. But please don't justify your actions in pretending you are some tough surgeon and I need to toughen up. Don't claim that it is the norm for surgeons to act like this. Granted you have to be tough to be a surgeon, but that is not the same thing as insulting people for expressing an opinion, especially in a forum where it is typical for people to express opinions.

Well, have you thought about this:

Maybe Dynx is a robot.....programmed to be a jerk. Your fears about technology are totally coming true!

BTW, this has been discussed before, probably multiple times.

Also, I'm still selling robot insurance if anyone is interested:

Sorry guys...but I've placed an in-thread warning about calling each other names and giving both of you personal warnings all of which apparently has been ignored.

The professional forums are moderated more stringently than others and such behavior is not tolerated especially when its been called attention to.

This thread is now closed.😡
