is it possible for board to ask question like for example what drug would you give female patient for ACNE in some sort of clinical vignette by giving couple of drugs and ask for example

A)cyclosporine
b)Retinoic acid
c)Tetracylcine
d)Penicillin

I remember this questions because i had this question in in house exam, can't remember the whole vignette but, the question was which drug would you prescribe.

I think this is beyond Step 1 but the answer to your question would be tetracycline right?

I can't remember which was correct, i just happen to recall this while i was going over FA vitamins lol. I know tetracycline and vitamin A both can be used for ACNE. I hate these questions 😡 so you think tetracycline is correct?

to treat vitamin A, it needs to be isoretinoin form not retinoic acid. so the answer if that was a question would be tetracycline.

Yes tetracycline would definitely be 1st line oral. Isotretinoin is more reserved due to birth defects in a fertile female.

i think it'd depend on the vignette...if her acne is refractory and she's on/willing to be on ocp and get a pregnancy test ever month then away we go with the vit a. if it's milder/she's seems less compliant go with docy...although it's a teratogen too heh

if they gave you the pathophys of the acne that could clue you in...excess sebum, rx w/vit a...p. acnes going crazy, pick doxy

oh, and if she's crazy/hx of mental illness in the family don't give vit a...actually, i think you need to give any pt some sort of psych eval before giving them isotretinoin (i either heard that in class or i'm making that up)
