I'm just wondering about what kind of doctors are on call and which ones are not? If I wanted to have kids and start a family, which doctor positions are best for doing this?

Almost every specialty takes call. There are just a few who don't:

These are the ones I can think of that do not take much call:
Rheum
Psych
Derm
ED- although you do work overnight, you work shifts.

Psych has call. People don't reserve mental issues for the daytime and most of the suicide attempts come into the ED at night and they have to be seen by someone. At the big programs psych residents may be on call every 4 days. Derm residents take call but not all that much.

Rheum & Allergists don't have call. PM&R probably has rare call after intern year.

Other physician shift workers are hospitalists, intensivists, laborists (delivery babies), neonatologists, besides ER docs. But you could also consider working for a mega group of physicians where call is less frequent. Or a walk-in clinic, public health clinic, family-planning clinic, VA clinic, or college health clinic where there is no call.

Family docs and internists in my area take call by phone, but have ER docs and hospitalists see anyone with night time emergencies or needing admission.
