Does a study buddy really help?

I have been hearing a lot about 'active' study and 'passive' study for the steps.

It seems , I need to have a study partner for 'active' study.

Folks who have used a study partner successfully for the steps, please advise on 'study buddy techniques'.

And, how can I do 'active study', if I do not have a study partner? Is it possible?

I just pretend I'm teaching someone the materials even if no one's there, to the extent of putting on a tie and using a laser pointer.

Just kidding about the tie and laser.

My dogs are great at playing students... very active listeners.

I needed a study partner not so much for the active learning, but for the mutual support. At the end, studying gets brutal, it is good to have someone to motivate you along the way.

When I study with people I go slower than I do alone so I would never use one. What I do find helpful is having someone I can call and complain about how much I hate med school and hate studying to (i.e- another classmate), but besides that I think it depends on your own studying style.

I just go out on the balcony of my apartment and try to own my roommate with questions about material I just studied while trying to pretend that I casually reviewed the subject a few weeks back. After I've made him feel like a complete waste of life, he does the same thing back to me until I feel the same. Then we go back into our rooms and study for another 4 hours and repeat.

That's all the study buddy scene I need. Your mileage may vary. Balcony not included.

Find a person/people who are as smart or smarter than you. Don't interact, but study within the same vicinity, and ask questions of each other regarding difficult concepts.

When you study with someone with a weaker understanding of the material ("i don't know I just memorized that") you end up doing all of the teaching and get little in return.

The med school I went to is notorious for couples. What I mean is that if you went to my med school, there is a high chance that you would get with someone in your class. If you go to our school library, you'll see a bunch of couples studying for the USMLE together. ahaha

I think that "parallel play" is better than "cooperative play" here. I mean, just studying individually but next to someone else (who is also studying on their own) would probably be nice. I think studying "cooperatively" would slow things down and waste tons of time, but studying "parallel-ly" would be nice. Step studying can get insanely lonely and boring, so having someone next to you would be nice. A nice looking girl? Even nicer!

Too bad I didn't have anyone. 🙁

Active studying is fulfilled by using question banks. A study partner helps with flash cards, but only a high-school reading ability is required for that. There's no need to track down a classmate, and in general, they'll just add to your anxiety.
