I'm starting to get really concerned that I'm missing emails. I can't figure out any way to find out if I have a junk mail storage place or not. I contacted the IT people for my school yesterday but they haven't responded yet. One of my LOR writers was having no problem e-mailing me then all of a sudden my account kept kicking the e-mails back to him so I just thought he wasn't responding. Then I just e-mailed UNECOM about when I could expect to receive the secondary and I was told they have record that they sent it to me on 10/1. I e-mailed Roger Corbman over a week ago and still haven't heard back. I e-mailed Nova yesterday and haven't heard but of course that was a lot more recent. I can look at part of my e-mails that tells me what junk mail stuff is on and not but no way to figure out if it's actually accessible to change. In the meantime, I just added all the schools' e-mail addresses to my address book. Should that help?

Anyone? Anyone? (Channeling Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

Your e-mail service should have a Spam folder. Adding the domains of each school would be tricky, because some aren't as simple as @schoolx.edu, so unless they tell you the address to allow specifically, it won't be a reliable method.

Which e-mail service do you have? Gmail? Hotmail? Yahoo?

It's my school account and we have Groupwise. I had never heard of it before. My husband said it would be more professional to use my school account but now with all these problems I'm wondering if using my hotmail would have been easier.

Yeah... I'd use my gmail account, it's hassle-free. Unfortunately, I have no idea about Groupwise, having never used it myself. I haven't used my .edu email addy for years. I still don't know my password, lol.

There's no spam folder, though? Can you take a screenshot of the interface and post the pic up here?

I've gone through all the folders and there is no spam folder. I have no clue how to do the screenshot thing. I'm not very technologically hip.

1) Find "print screen" button on keyboard and punch it
2) Open MS Paint, and click on paste
3) save picture
4) host picture
5) post pic here on SDN

Sounds like you just don't have a folder, though, because I'm sure you would have found it by now.

Okay I got through the first three steps but what does host picture mean and how do I do that?

You should find the settings or options on your e-mail account and see if there's some way you can add the particular e-mail addresses specifically to let the system know it's not spam.

Are you sure you don't know if you have a spam folder? Most systems have the default folders "inbox" "sent" "drafts" "deleted" "spam". Check your deleted or trash or spam folders to make sure there's nothing important you accidentally got rid of.

Also make sure when you open your e-mails, you aren't accidentally clicking something like "mark as spam" instead of trying to go to the next e-mail.

You'd probably have better luck just asking your classmates about your school e-mail system.

All else fails, you should open a gmail account and let everyone know to direct their e-mails there. Gmail works great, I love it.

Good luck.

Are gmail accounts free? Do you think it would be a problem to e-mail each school and have them use a different e-mail account for me? I've tried everything to figure this out but I really can't find anywhere I can set junk mail settings. I added each school's e-mail address (including ones sent from individuals) to my address book but I don't think there's a way to add it to my options or settings. I will double check though. Thanks guys!

gmail is free. i think you can just sign up for it now -- you used to have to be 'invited' by a current user.

And I don't think it would be a problem -- call or email each school and let them know your current email software is having problems and you would like to change it to ensure the best and most reliable communication possible.

Thanks ShyRem! I just signed up for an account and I will e-mail all the schools and let them know. Hopefully this will ease my mind in regards to missing e-mails.

You can also get something for your desktop called "gmail notifier". It puts a little envelope on your toolbar that turns dark blue when you get email so you don't need to be so OCD about checking it. It's in the google gmail website somewhere.

Where would you get the idea that I'm OCD about checking my e-mail? But seriously that would be a really nice feature to have. I'll have to see if I can figure it out.
