I have recently received two spots (BU and Marquette) for the alternate list for 2005. Guys, honestly, do you think my chances for 2005 admission are almost over? I need some honest advice here  I will really appreciate it.

it depends on the school... i've heard that chances of getting on off the marquette alternate list are pretty slim for out of state to none for in state... don't know anything about BU.

BU's alternate list should move fluidly, dont know about the other one.

Does anyone know what are the chanced of getting into U of Michigan if I am place on the alternate list??? (I am out of state)

Did they tell you where on the alternate list you are? If you are #1 or #2, you had some chance of getting in. Every year, somebody just doesn't show up. This year somebody didn't show up on the first day, so they called up one of the alternates from out of state at 9am and she was here by 2 pm that same day. Not sure how it works at all schools, but if you aren't alternate #1 and MAYBE alternate #2, you should look elsewhere. Just being honest.

I DISAGREE... i think atleast if you are within atleast the first 20, if not up to 50, you may still have a chance
... REMEMBER people put down deposits for schools, as they wait for their top choice school to respond, they will remove their deposit. As well, alternate number one and two, if they are being called up on the first day of school might already be somewhere else that point, and chances are they will say no...

at columbia, we were told that they have a 38% yield usually, which means of the acceptances that are sent out, only 38% people actually come. And he said this was a high yield. Also director of adcom told us that april and may are the most active months in terms of people letting go of their seats... so dont lose hope yet

Thanks Dentist to Be. I recently found myself on the Columbia waitlist and had forgotten about the 38% yield thing. Maybe things are looking a little better than I thought! 😎

For those of you dental students at schools where they do not accept many out of staters (or even 0)....if you are in the top 5 on an alternate list on an in state list as of right now and all the seats are full (the school that has you waitlisted only sends out the exact amount of seats available...in the past they extended too many acceptances and couldnt take many from the waitlist) how quickly or slowly do you think my status could change? I realize (as one poster pointed out) that lots of movement occurs right before school starts especially on out of state waitlists or private school waitlists...but I am hoping it starts moving within the next month or so (April/May as Dentist2be pointed out). What makes you think that April/May is a time where lots of movement occurs? I am #4 on the list at UIC. Some positive news is yesterday (1 day after finding out I was waitlisted) two people decided they didnt want to go and I moved from #6 to #4. I do not think this trend will continue and am hoping to move 1-2 spots by the end of April (to me thats fairly optimistic).

About out of state waitlists.....many have mentioned to me before that they move quickly and it is true...I came of a waitlist after being around #20 in about 1 month or so. I would say private and out of state waitlists probably move 20-40 spots especially later on in the cycle and would try to remain as positive as possible. The waiting sucks, but my best advice (and advice I should follow) is to try to forget about it and concentrate on something else. After receiving an interview at another school it focused my attention off of the school I was waitlisted at and one day BOOM I got the phone call and it caught me off guard. I know hockeydentist was on Marquette's out of state waitlist last year...personally I think they are the exception to the rule in terms of a lot of movement. If you are in state there is even less movement (as there is at any school that differentiates waitlists by in state and out of state).

Marquette waiting list, from my experience last year, they had about 3 spots move the entire summer for outstate students. Or from what I was told, you can't trust anybody when talking to someone on the phone.

If they like you, they will tell you what exact number you are on the waitlist ( i think they will) if your in bottom of the pile they will try and come up with a quick response like, no the pool is not ranked, so stop calling us.

Alternate means u will not get in, you will never get in and you will die a horrble fiery death. It is the worse thing that can happen to a human being. Just kidding, I was on the alternate list and i got it. Dont worry about it, its better than being rejected. Good luck.

That's exactly what the lady at Marquette told me when I called. She said that they don't have a ranking alternate pool list. I guess Marquette doesn't like me
