just wondering if anyone does research during the year at a neighboring med school. i'm considering doing some research this year and i wanted to explore as many opportunities as possible.

Yeah, a lot of my friends from California did research in LA (UCLA, USC, etc), and our school (Pitt) paid them the same research stipend that people doing research here received.

I know aussie students get to do their research all over the world

With a little legwork, it shouldn't be too hard to set up a research opportunity at another school. The Sarnoff Fellowship is a prestigious research program for medical students that strongly recommends doing research at another institution...

yes
never thought twice about it

I have done research projects during elective months in MS 2 and MS 3 at other institutions. The key to doing this is contacting the department in person rather than talking to student affairs - some departments are real nice about having you over for a short amount of time while others say contact student affairs. The problem with student affairs is that if you are not an MS 4 and/or you have not completed all your core requirements, you will not be allowed to do an elective month. On one of my research months, the department coordinator told me to ignore student affairs about the elective month and I was able to do the rotation, without the OSA lady even knowing I was there.
