I'm really interested in doing Yoga, I read several papers on how it can relieve stress and add stamina and vitality to your health. Does anyone do yoga on sdn? Does it actually work?

I haven't for a while because I've been such an exercise slacker recently, but I keep on meaning to get back to regular yoga practice. Yes, when I did it regularly, it did wonders for my anxiety. There's no better feeling than being in savasana after a long practice, just breathing and chilling. From a physical standpoint, yoga's good at working the parts of your body that are neglected in more traditional exercise, and of course, it's great for flexibility -- it's also good for letting go of your ego if you're an inflexible person like me. It hits my hamstrings and obligues like nothing else.

Hmm, maybe I'll do some yoga today. I did daily practice for a while, and it was wonderful.

Whoops forgot to ask, How did you start learning Yoga? Did you take a class or read some books or watch some dvds?

Yoga is super relaxing and can really improve your flexibilty, posture and strength.

I would start with a Hatha class, and try out a few different classes to find a teacher that you like, because they really vary. I like classes a lot better than books/dvds because the instructor can help you with your form and you can meet more experienced students who can also give you tips.

After taking classes for a few years, I started doing it mainly on my own, just to save money. I feel more calm after doing yoga than other types of exercise.

yep, classes are the best introduction. if you're in school, your university probably has really cheap classes. also, there are some great videos out there -- my favorites are yoga shakti and power yoga for happiness.

I practice yoga 5-6 days per week, and I highly recommend it. The best things about it are that you can do the exercises almost anywhere, you can still do a little something even if you only have five minutes to spare, and it is mentally as well as physically relaxing. I take classes once or twice per week, and I also practice on my own.

The one thing I would caution a new person about is that you should absolutely never force yourself to do more than you are capable of doing. If you go to a class, you will see people who have been practicing for years, and they are the ones who can do all kinds of crazy postures. But just do the poses at your own level, and work on your breathing technique. Yoga is all about proper breathing; the exercises are meant to help you learn to be more in tune with your body.

you want to try something that will kick your ass and make you feel like you just ran marathon ? try bikram yoga (hot room yoga). My fiance teaches this style and it is probably the hardest workout I've ever done. I've played football in HS and college, and summer conditioning days don't hold a candle to this.

Basically, you are in a 100 degree room at 50% humidy for 90 minutes doing someing like 40 posses. it's an ass kicker.

I don't specifically do Yoga, but I do stretching workouts pretty much every night before I go to bed. I'm pretty sure I go through a lot of the standard yoga positions. I'll just say it feels really darn good to loosen up and I'd definitely recommend it.

I do yoga and Tai Chi. You might want to try tai chi too. It's great and not too strenuous. It opens up the natural channels in your body and aligns your meridians--all of which helps alleviate stress. You can find all this stuff on instructional dvds.

You mean yoga for the abs? Or yoga straight from India?

thats pretty cool... how did you first start it? like with classes or books or dvds or all three? I'm thinking about just reading up on yoga for right now and doing stuff on my own until the school year hits... then I"ll take some classes

Is he that little guy off Star Wars?

I love practicing yoga. My university offers classes, but I am usually busy during those times, so I use DVDs by Rodney Yee. He offers DVDs at different levels and also has a few that are "power yoga."

I like to run a lot, but there are times when I can't motivate myself to go running because it is really hot/cold outside, so I stay indoors and do yoga instead. It is amazing how relaxing it is, yet at the same time you get a fantastic workout. I highly recommend it, especially if you get stressed out during the semester. I have had certain times where maybe I was worried about tests or different things I had going on during the week, and I will pop in a DVD, and by the end when I do the cool down, it will almost put me to sleep because I am soooo relaxed. 👍

If you are considering beginning a yoga practice, find a good studio and spend money on a 10 class pass or something. You can hurt yourself doing yoga and the best way to avoid it is to learn properly. You can move to a more independent practice after a little bit.

I love yoga - I used to do it all the time until I was in a car accident last year that left some lasting abdominal injuries. By the time I was physically ready to go back I was very frustrated by how much flexibility I'd lost and so I never got back into it. Now that I am an MS1 (with my first test tomorrow - YAY for procrastination) I wish I'd gone back and kept up my practice. I am naturally a very tense, often irritable, person and it really helped my anxiety and stress levels.
