I'm a freshman in Queens College in NY. I was just wondering whether or not pre-meds and medstudents have time to go to the gym while they are in school or studying. For the medical school students, this might be a dumb question, but are there gyms in every medschool? I've been going to the gym ever since I was a sophomore in highschool and I'm just worried that I might have to cut out my gym time in medical school because of the workload, not enough time, etc.

I swim for ~45 min about 5 days per week.

not anymore, but still do push ups and sit ups a few times a week.

this thread should be "does anyone manage to get black ops into your week" imo.

u get at least 30 minutes a day in the morning, nothing big, just yoga/calisthenics to wake up. not enough to stave off weight gain unfortunately lol

I go to the gym pretty much every day for about 30-45 minutes. I just do cardio usually but it's a great break from studying and helps clear your head, etc. Even if you're taking a tough courseload it's definitely worth finding the time to go...think of it as a way of maintaining your sanity 😀

i make time for the gym. i need to have a really good excuse not to go. i try to go at least 5 days a week for about 1.5 hrs. each day.

I chase toddlers all day. This is my exercise. 🙂

4 days a week in the morning before class. Sucks getting up early but no way I'd get myself to go in the evening

I climb 4 days a week for about 3 hours a session and still have seemingly endless time to do other things as well. Manage your time well and days become very spacious.

In med school and I go every day for ~45min-hr

I'm an ms2 right now. I still workout. Not as much as I'd like. I have lost over 20 pounds of mass since the school year started. That being said, I was prepping for heavy weight strongman competitions before, which is nearly impossible for me to dedicate 5 days a week and 2+ hours ( with set up) to workout, especially since I've been gunning for straight a's.

I do lots of circuits now and do stupid things like 5 pushups for every practice question I miss. Need a better diet, but that is a whole other story.

How's it like eating in medschool though? Are there always healthy choices available to you guys? Do you guys always eat eggs every morning?

I play college soccer, go to school, and have a part-time job. Its all about managing your time. Plus once you're in med school you're going to want to take some time to exercise. It will help keep you sane

Do you live in the city and go to gym or do you live outside of the city and are lucky enough to have a local playground.

are u dudes JACKED...do you bench and squat > 225

Not as much as i use too. School is more important and plus i have all my years of living to look good ;p

yes. 1 hr a day isn't much of a time commitment. Its tougher if you live in an area where gyms aren't easily accessible, but in that case I'd recommend just getting a stationary bike and some free weights, that'll cost about the price of a year's gym membership or less anyway.

I don't know about that. I think keeping healthy is just as important as school. It's not like you'll be oozing with free time during and after med school. Cut back some on browsing SDN and use it to go to the gym.

The time I'm browsing on here, i study also. I just got home not too long ago anyways. Also, taking 23 credits this semester with 2 diff volunteer positions. But occasionally if i find time i will. I use to go 5x a week for an 1+ hr.

I've seen the lifting weights thing die out in college. Many of my friends and myself included don't lift as much as we used to.

In high school we had way too much free time and many of us lifted weights because it helped in a sport we played in. It was also just big in the culture of high school (kinda like it is in Jersey Shore)...some of the meatheads thought the only way to get respect was to look like Arnold Schwarzzeneggar.

I used to bench 325.

However, that was years ago - premed status has since atrophied me into a flabby girly-man.

t-shirt time!

Theoretically I do have time. I just either A). waste it by doing other things or B.) I'm too tired/lazy.

Both are poor excuses though.

You aren't jacked if you bench and squat over 225...

i'm doing 3x bodyweight for deadlift and 1.8x bodyweight for squat. bench is only 1.3x. in any case, I'm not jacked. i'm a lean bodytype since I sprint. but my track workouts take longer than the gym so there really isn't any excuse for anyone to at least take time to RUN...

Older nontrad premed here. I exercise 45-90 minutes 7 days a week, no excuses. 🙂 I take an exercise class 1-2 times a week and do walking/jogging intervals the other days. I am really planning to stick to this routine when I start school in July.

Currently working out 5 days/week
Eventually go to medical school
Start only having time for 3 days/week
Begin to shrink
Hop on dat dere cell tech
???????
Profit

Strangely SDN beats out most things except for maybe sex.

If it's important to you, I think you'll be able to fit it in.. especially during undergrad. Even 15-20 min will do for something small like bi's, tri's, abs, cardio, etc. Just try to keep it close behind 'Get good great grades' on your priority list. I admit to taking a hiatus throughout my last semester to focus on some rough classes and research, but, looking back, I could have squeezed it in. Who needs sleep anyway, right? lol

No but walk by my school gym as I get into my car. Exercise is wayyyyyyyy overrated.

I try to lift as much as I can, but the hardest part is maintaining a decent diet to be honest.

My metabolism blows, so putting on weight is tough, and whenever I see gains it's because I have the time to devote to my diet. During my heavy test weeks and I have to skip on those extra meals (only at 3 opposed to 6) to study then I see losses so I really only "maintain" during the semester and get bigger over summer and stuff.

I don't have a goal to be a body builder, just a large-athletic build, and naturally athletic but I'd like to put on the extra 15 lbs (of fat and muscle) just to fill out a bit more. Plus summer time is coming up...

this. i bench/squat >>>225 and i would not consider myself "jacked". to me, "jacked" is for people like jay cutler and ronnie coleman.

For most of my undergrad I've had time to hit the gym regularly. The only times I wasn't able to were my MCAT semester and last semester due to interviews.

It really all comes down to priorities. If it's important to you, you'll find time to do it.

If you really want to go to the gym, you can make it happen. You just have to manage your time well. I'm on the tennis team at my school, and we play 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, plus an all-day tournament almost every weekend (and sometimes 2 days/wkend). Even though it may be stressful at times, it can be done!

surprisingly I work out a lot more in med school than in undergrad, prob bc more stress = have to relieve it somehow, and after getting a ton of oxygen in my head great to focus on studying, I highly recommend it. I go 6x a week, 45 min each, also if you can't seem to be able to stay in a routine, sign up for a race of some kind (marathon, bike, triatholon, whatever you want that ll be really challenging), that way you ll be motivated to work!

I run for 45 minutes and ride my bike to classes (i go to a commuter school)
<---- prepping to run the NYC marathon

Any cyclists here?
This year I'm living in on-campus apartments that are a little farther away from main campus than where I was at last year. To compensate, my dad gave me his old bike that he bought for himself when he was accepted to dental school 30 years ago. It's a beautiful, vintage roadbike and I'm looking into biking long distances regularly.

You are? I've been thinking whether I should do the NYC marathon this fall, or not. Been into running since I was 9. Ran several half-marathons, and one full marathon last spring.

I usually hit the gym three to four times a week for about 1 hr each.

Yeah, i was on my HS track team, but since then ive stopped and haven't done much athletics, so completing the marathon is currently my goal for the year.
Maybe we might bump into each other if you decide to go! 😉

In undergraduate I tried to keep up on working out but never really did. I run every night after I'm done with everything now, I hope to maintain that in Med school

Work:40 hours a week, A.M. classes Mon. thro Thur. before I go to work and workout everyfriday for an hour.

I go to a gym... but the plastic is good, there are new routes every day and the atmosphere is great. The real deal I save for holidays 🙂 I've been to plenty of climbing gyms and I'm seriously in love with mine, so I can't bring myself to complain.

thanks for the responses guys. I see its all about managing your time. Shouldn't be so hard.

*easier said than done right? lol.*

Med school is definitely requires huge lifestyle changes but you'll discover that if it's important to you, you'll find time for it. I didn't work out that much during my first two years, but the during my third year on surgery I got fat (my ob-gyn rotation didn't help with my weight... happy new parents= donuts, cookies, cakes= fat med students), thus I started running again so I could fit into my pants.

I can't comment about free time in medical time as I'm not there yet, but if you're using your "pre-med" status as an excuse that you can't workout/run around for 1 hr per day then you're either just lazy or can't manage your time properly. Pre-med really isn't that bad...it's not like you're studying 16 hours/day. There's got to be 1 hour in the day that you have to go to the gym.

yes! use to do 2 hrs of gym/day (watched TV in the gym) in my first two years of school (granted, i skipped class most of the time and did a lot of independent studying), it's really important for your own sanity/physical well being (cliche, i know, but you'll know what i mean). third year, well, depends on what rotation, for psych and outpatient medicine, you have more than enough time, but not so much for inpt medicine, surg, and ob, unless you have a home gym and can multitask, although i doubt youd be in the mood.
