I am considering living in a cargo van during pharmacy school to save on housing costs. Most schools have a gym so I could shower and brush my teeth in there. The library will be my study area.

The only downside I can think of is coping with the intense workload of pharmacy school while coming home every night to such a cramped, uncertain environment. Cops and store managers would no doubt roust me in the middle of the night. The moral hardship might prove harsh enough to send my grades plunging.

What do you guys think?

If I was a moderator I would ban you from making threads. lol

I've actually heard of a former student at my CC several years back who actually did that and made his way to Harvard after that.

Seriously, are you done making these f**cking stupid threads? :beat::beat::beat:

What the hell is with all the hate? Honestly, that could be a decent idea because student housing isn't that great anyway. The biggest downside is that the van probably gets really cold during winter.

As long as it is a VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!! You should be fine if that is the case :meanie:

^lmao i like this thread

As long its a white van so you can call it vanna white I'm down. And yes, you should be banned from making threads lol....

You forgot to ask....

"What are my chances?"

I say do it. Live in a van. I support you Thetan. You can do it. I'm sure your lab partner will find it edgy. You guys can listen to Bon Jovi "livin on a prayer" everyday. It will be your special song, and she'll forget all about those pesky B's in O-Chem. Live the dream bro. Live it. Be it. OWN IT!!!

OP,

your threads are entertaining... too bad you cant make anymore.

You have the craziest threads on here

I support the OP because his threads are more interesting that most of what gets posted here.

I'll pray for your success, sir.

I hope it isn't the van that says "Free Candy" on the side.

OP,

your threads are entertaining and creative.
Have you considered a career in marketing, PR, journalism (print, web, magazine, free lance), Arts (performing arts, music, web design, theatre, dance), or fashion, graphic, or interior design?

There are tons and tons of jobs and opportunities out there, so dont limit yourself to pharmacy and healthcare just because it's "hot" or popular. Do what you love: whether it be:

  • Entertainment (actor, director, producer, profession athlete, dancer and choreographer, musician),
  • Law(Judge, lawyer, paralegal, court reporter),
  • Engineering (mechanical, bio, electrical, chemical, civil),
  • Journalism and Media (news reporter/analyst/correspondant, Television, motion picture editor, Photography, science writing, sound technician, radio talk show host),
  • Education (teacher, grade, secondary, post-secondary), or
  • computer programing, computer science, Accounting, actuary, and architect.
Have you also considered a career in optometry?

How about dentistry?

Or veterinary medicine?

Best of luck finding the right career for you!

Who is this person? They keep responding to threads saying you should do something besides pharmacy.

I want to be a superhero, but a career counselor squashed my dreams. 🙁

Not only do you need to offer free candy but you might also have to be able to grow a moustache in some states to operate such vehicles.

Pharmacist superhero?
You could make medications that would give you different powers 👍

Hey...pharmacy isn't a bad back up to superhero 🙂

Haha, I'd have to have a witty hero name, and I already wear glasses so that should be sufficient in disguising my true identity. I suppose my coat can be my cape... or wait, maybe that is a bad idea.

When I attended UCLA, people really did live in their cars. I think you should go for it. I recommend picking Midwestern, CPG. You will have more interesting threads if you post about living in your van in the middle of summer when it is still over 100 degrees at 10 pm.

Sounds pretty epic and exciting. I could use more excitement in my life. Hell, the craziest thing I did all day was get some buffalo wings and beer at my local Kroger... 🙁

Isn't trolling against the rules? If SDN1977 can get banned, this person should. 👎

Wait, how did SDN1977 get banned? I remember she used to post a lot...

I was considering living in my Civic Si, staying in my study spot until 3AM-4AM and then just going to my car, then I realized my Civic Si doesn't have a shower.

Maybe you could get a roll of quarters and just go hose down at the nearest 24-hour car wash?

I've been living in a Westfalia for the last 4 years of my undergrad. It works quite well actually. And my dream girlfriend I met in physiology lab loves it. You get the basics of a kitchen and there is a bed in the back. There is even a privacy curtain that partitions off the kitchen from the bed. And as for showering, I used the locker rooms in the athletics center. The only drawback was that you needed to buy shower sandals to avoid ringworm. But my parents helped me out with buying that stuff since they were so grateful I moved out of their attic.

The only problem with the westfalia living is setting up residency in the new state I'm thinking of going to pharmacy in. I don't have a mailing address or bills to prove residency. I'd like pharm school to be cheap. What are my chances of getting residency while living out of my van?

Living in your car only works in schools with gyms. If you don't have access to a shower then it won't take long before you look more like a homeless person than a student.

Are you the OP with a new name?

What are the chances of another super nerd just like the OP who just happens to have a similar avatar, name, and just happens to live in a van and talks about his lab partner.

****ing troll.

:troll:

why spend money on the van, just get one roller blade and push off with the other foot, save on parking and gas.

i think you should invest in the property market now and purchase a motel. then, knock out all the walls and convert it into a study hall/mail order pharmacy.

or you could ***** yourself out. meaning tutoring local grade school/college students. always good money.

Forget the haters. You are a winner.

This is exactly my backup plan for if I ever could not have my parents help except it would be for undergrad. I'm going to get loans for pharm school.

OP, interestingly enough my friend did this in undergrad for 2 months,
It was a Scion XB not a van though. He showered at gym and stuff like you said. He was told to move a couple of times in the middle of the night by cops. It was hell when it got hot and also a risk of getting robbed. He had emotional issues after the experience, very agitated and moody. I think it is not worth it. It also depends, how big is your van?

I know some people that do this except they dont even have a van they just sleep in the library...

I don't own a car or van. My thinking is, regardless, I'll need a vehicle for pharmacy school. So why not a cargo van? That way, both my transport and living needs will be met. An 80s econoline van can be purchased for under $2000 dollars.

go invest in an rv. you will die from living in a van, die from not moving enough/not really having anywhere to go.

what if you're hungry in the middle of the night? you drive to mcdonalds? isn't that a waste of money?

what about the gas?

what about air? will you keep the a/c on the whole time?

don't you want to sit down and relax every now and then, how do you do that in a van?

Do you think before you type anything? How the hell is this kid applying to pharmacy!

go for it. keep your costs down, and come out with profit. you have future champ written all over you.

You should attend a school close to home or close to a relative's home....that way you get free rent! 😉

Dude, why even spend money on a van?? It is way too expensive for the purpose of lodging, shoot for a tent. Get something camouflage and small enough just so the surrounding residents won't notice and report you to authority.

Tents are good, but you gotta watch out for the wildlife.

That's why you buy a gun...All it takes is one deer and you don't have to go to the store for months! Back to the roots

pfffft. A tent? All he really needs is a tarp and a sleeping bag. Why waste money on all that extra material?

Tents still cost money. I've got a big cardboard box in my basement that you're more than welcome to. Just set it up underneath a bridge or other sheltered area. While we're at it, I've got a ton of extra newspapers out in the back hall just waiting to be thrown out, you can have those and fashion them into blankets and a pillow.
