Self explanatory title. Are you eligible to join the Harvard Club by completing residency at a Harvard-associated residency?

http://www.harvardclub.com/club/scripts/library/view_document.asp?GRP=20289&NS=M&APP=80&DN=MFAQ

The question can be broadened to all similar schools and their respective clubs in major cities (i.e. The Cornell Club, Yale Club, etc.)

Well WuBear, it is a interesting question that deserves to be answered. Unfortunately, I do not have that answer.

Why should it? Completing a residency is the equivalent of doing a post-doc. You don't get a degree for it.

False.

You do get a degree. That's why it's called GRADUATE medical education.

And what degree is it that you get?

The MD/DO is awarded at the med school stage. Internship + residency is a job. Should I get into Harvard Club for being a janitor there?

Ugh why would you want to... Having to put on business casual clothing just to go outside your room = unnecessarily pretentious

I don't know, but I was in the office of a doctor last week while shadowing and she had her degrees from her residencies hanging on the wall.

Those aren't degrees they're certificates.

Well, as an unqualified pre-med, I think I'll comment on this thread like the many other unqualified pre-meds before me. 🙄

If they give you an @harvard.edu email during your residency, wouldn't that *technically* make you eligible?

EDIT: I just realized they probably wouldn't give you an @harvard.edu email during residency...probably more along the lines of @mgh.com or edu or whatever (same would go for B&W). Disregard this post. 🙂

Ya, I don't know about the residency either, but apparently at least postdocs are eligible to join after a year.

Edit: still don't know why you'd want to though

That's tricky one. For the Brigham/MGH OB-GYN program you actually may hold some semblance of a teaching position at HMS: "All residents hold concurrent appointments as clinical fellows at Harvard Medical School and have a vital role in teaching our medical students." I wouldn't bet on it though.

At Penn, this is definitely so, for The Penn Club NYC at least. But let's be honest. It's residency. When are you going to have time to hang out at the Penn Club?

If you actually follow the first link and read the first section it becomes quite clear that you do not have to graduate from Harvard to join the Club. Based on HumbleMDs post, it looks like residents can become members. (?)

"Any person currently holding a Harvard appointment to any of the Harvard teaching hospitals."

A residency position probably is an "appointment"

I like some the hobbies/interests they let you select when applying for membership.

-Bird watching
-Wine, Scotch, and Tequila tasting
-Tennis Theater (?? like watching tennis?)
-Women of the Harvard Club

Yes you're allowed to join if you're a resident. A number of departments do their Christmas and other parties there as well

Sounds obnoxious yet probably a good place to network.

A couple things I want to mention.

The link says "current appointment". I am wondering if completing residency makes you eligible just like completing medical school or completing undergrad, for life not just for the duration of your appointment. Someone in the thread pointed out that completing residency is not like completing something in which you get a degree. Someone else suggested that residency is a certificate program.

Wait a minute: The site says, They are also eligible if they are, or have been (any of the following).

I think this answers my question. If you "have been" at any point the holder of a university appointment (i.e. resident?) then you are eligible.

The remaining question:

Is an appointment at a university's teaching hopsital (MGH or B&W for instance) synonymous with an appointment at "the university" (Harvard)?

Yes, residents hold appointments at HMS.

i dunno... is it harder to get into harvard undergrad vs med school vs residency vs fellowship vs professorship/attending vs other graduate education?

I'm starting my own club. With blackjack. And hookers. In fact...screw the club.

white america's fascination with harvard is amazing.

Odd use of the term white America considering I've never seen people more obsessed with Harvard than Asians and Indians
