Hey quick question-----which classification system do we need to know for hte DATs---the old one or the new one

For example, whereas Monera was once a kingdom of prokaryotes----now prokaryotes are considered to be part of two separate domains, Archaea and Bacteria

So which system should we know---the old (Monera) one, New (Archaea Bacteria) one, or both?

I actually have the same question. I am going through Kaplan right now, and they don't discuss Archea, even though I remember learning about it in my Bio class...

My Barron's book (1st Edition) very briefly mentions the 5 kingdom system of Monera, Protista, Fungi, Animalia, and Plantae. My Kaplan book (2009-2010) also mentions the 5 kingdom system, and NOT the domain system. 🙂

Doesnt really matter bc the only diff is that Monera has been divided into two domains: Bacteria and Archaea. I think that is the only major difference. I wouldnt be surprised if they used the kingdom or the domains. Learn that minor difference and you are fine.

I remember learning that the three domains under the new system were Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukaryotes...not that Archaea was part of one of the five kingdoms. Isn't "domain" a step higher (more broad classification) than "kingdom?"

Can anyone clarify?
