I am hunting for a ranking of the DO schools. I have searched the local bookstores and numerous web sites, but no luck. Two other people have asked for the same info (on 1-30 & 1-13)on this site, but there isn't an answer to those. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

As far as I know, there are none. You can go by several things to help you make a decision:
1) stats for incoming students, such as MCAT and GPA; check this message board. It's somewhere here
- while not foolproof, a school that requires higher stats tends to be better
2) reputation of school
- talk to people
- check out this message board; it's very helpful
3) go for one of the more established schools if you want to play it safe

What SPECIFICALLY are you looking to have ranked? Are you just looking for something to tell you that SCHOOL A is "better" than SCHOOL B? For you, what does "better" mean? Higher GPAs and MCATs? More full time faculty? Affiliations with specific hospitals? Availability of a D.O./Ph.D. program? Board exam scores? Residency placement? Minority acceptance? Percent of students pursuing primary care?

Criteria determines where the school lands in the ranking system and I'd recommend you rely on your own criteria than someone elses. Combine the information from the different schools, medical students, and whatever you can find in those "Getting into Medical School" books and you can easily see which schools are "better" (for you, anyways).

Good luck.

I really appreciate the tips on how to create my own ranking of DO school according to criteria that are important to me. I guess I just wanted to see what the "pros" had to say about the different schools.

How do I find this 'message board?'

Any directions would be appreciated.

thanx

If you want stats on any school, osteopathic or allopathic, you can go to this link and enter the school name to get information on several different aspects:

Hope this helps.

Find a school that allows a great deal of flexibility in the clinical years. This will greatly increase your odds of landing a residency that you desire. Ultimately, you will find that where you do a residency is more important than the school you attended.

Actually this is half true. The school doesn't matter if you graduated from US MD or an off-shore school like Ross University. If you graduated from one of those Walmart D.O. whatever schools, you'll stick out like a sore thumb. No thanks.
Damn the Pina Coladas must have been mixed extra strong out in Dominica this evening. Holla!

Oh yea? I'm real glad you're attending Ross University. Real proud you chose not to get a Walmart D.O. degree. Let me know when you survive the real rigors of an MD school. I'll be happy to let you rotate at my hospital in California.
so.much.rum.

Initially, I was a little disturbed. Now, I'm actually having a blast reading your posts Necromancer1.

That's how most students cope when they trying to handle REAL MEDICAL SCHOOL THAT AWARDS REAL MEDICAL DEGREES. It's tough but worth it.

Love,

an MD doctor.
But the coitus too...soo much of it on the island. I'm going to father at least 12 children by different women from my two years out here...will my foreign MD allow me to pay all the child support?

This dude sure is reviving a lot of thread from the late 90s.

We make our own ranking on SDN... Lol

You're right

1. School I'm going to
2. Schools that accepted me
Unranked. Schools that rejected me 😏
You are correct... The first school that accepts me will be named Harvard or JHU...

I had surgery from a doc from Ross (appendectomy). No joke, he told me about two friends from Ross: one who knocked up a random chick at a rum bar, the other said "**** it" to medicine and works one of the plantations on the virgin isles.

Hmm, so you can hide in a palm tree to escape the loan sharks.

What happens in Dominica, stays in Dominica

There is no real ranking of DO schools, there are however more established programs, brand new programs, and programs that have been around for a while but not that long.

There is no real ranking of DO schools

Even if there was one I don't think it would help anyone much. Ultimately the school that you feel the most comfortable at is the school that is best for you. For example, if you are interested in practicing in a rural area then you would be best off going to a school located in the middle of nowhere. If you want to practice in so-cal, then you would most likely be best off trying to get into WesternU. So even if there was a "best" school it wouldn't help you any if the school didn't match up with what you want out of medicine/life.

I see it like this: a large part of the ranking for MD schools (at least "tops schools") is how productive they are in research. This actually makes a lot of sense. The "best schools" are trying to find the newest thing. But that breaks down when the goal of a school is to produce clinicians. Yeah, U of WA and others are at the top of "primary care" rankings but those aren't the institutions you constantly hear about. So, it makes sense that DO schools for the most part don't end up in rankings. The stated goal is to educate clinicians/primary care docs. And for that matter, the MD schools that have similar missions don't end up high on the rankings. And the schools that do rank are larger (e.g. MSUCOM). That's all assuming that the schools participate in these rankings at all.
