Hello All

I want to ask if doing palliative fellowship help boost application for oncology fellowship, I am currently working as hospitalist , is it worth it to switch to palliative fellowship

Tahnks

It's impossible to say for certain, but in general, no. If you're not competitive for a Heme/Onc fellowship, doing a Pall Care fellowship is unlikely to change that. The major exception might be at the same institution -- if by doing the Pall Care fellowship you get exposure to Heme Onc faculty and the PD and they are really impressed by you, it might help you get your foot in the door in that program. But I wouldn't count on it.

My n=1 is a friend that didn’t match as a resident who did a palliative care/hospice fellowship the following year and them matched into a hem/onc the next year...I think it gave him something to do that was relevant for the year and an alternative if he didn’t match more than helping...but probably didn’t hurt.

I don't know for certain not being a fellowship PD, but I would imagine if you use your free time to get research in heme/onc related areas, the Palliative fellowship would at the very least be an opportunity to showcase to PDs that you did not sit around and not practice clinical medicine for a year. Alternatives would be chief year which I'm not sure is available to you or a hospitalist route.
