Does Downstate have a pulse?

Hey physicsMD,

If your official transcripts will be ready at the end of June, then by all means check daily with your school's registrar and rush those transcripts out the day they are available. Pay the extra money for the rush service, and pay the extra money for overnight express courier delivery, if that is an option. Pay by credit card or pay by cash so that your school doesn't have to wait for your check to clear. These are tiny minute details, but it might make the world of difference getting your transcripts in as early as possible. You never know.

In terms of contacting someone at Downstate, I can't help you there. Even now, as an accepted applicant, e-mail responses from them take several days. When they do respond, it's usually a one-liner, not filled with much information. Calling them on the phone is an option, but I don't think it's good as they are extremely busy. Whenever I call, I do it for a very good reason and I keep the conversation extremely short so that they don't get annoyed. No need to get on anybody's bad side. They specifically said NOT TO CALL in their letter, right?

Anyone get an interesting e-mail from Downstate today? 🙂

Anyone know when the orientation and start date for downstate ?

Orientation: August 18
First day of classes: August 25
Deadline for health forms to be submitted and getting medical clearance: June 30
Deadline for submition of CPR course cerificate copy: July 31

Hey Dee63 what did the email say?

I didn't get an email from them... BUT I finally got my alternate letter, or as they call it "ALTERANATE" ....

lets keep on waiting....

from hold to alternate to acceptance !!!!!

Good luck to everyone else !!! Have hope!

Congratulations Skijjag3!!!!! That's Great!!

So, I guess HOLD did = Hope!!

Do you think you will be going to Downstate, or are you deciding between schools/waiting on others?

Thanks...Downstate is my #1 choice!

Hey Skijag3,
when did you get your alternate status?

Anyone started working on their living arrangements at Downstate? I did the housing application but I am still considering off campus housing because it is cheaper.

I also filled out the housing forms, but wants to live off campus. However, I don't know the area much, so I am having trouble finding an apartment and a roomate....any suggestions?

Hey Partricia, I think I might live on campus for the first year. That way I won't have to commute and I will have more time for other things like studying, while getting adjusted to the rigors of medical school. The idea of paying $1000/month for a studio in a not so good neighborhood is a bit unsettling, however.

meh. i'll wait until the housing lottery is finished. if i end up getting a single studio on-campus, then i think i'll probably stay there. if not, i'll most likely live off campus. i just hope i don't get shot in my 4 years there.

hey Tein, no offense bro but I think you should take out the last part of your post. You won't get shot in the area around downstate. besides, this will be our school for the next four years, lets not speak badly of it. Just remember, great clinical exposure and medical education for 1/2 the price of private schools. I'm delighted to be going to downstate even if the area is not so good.

physicsMD-
I placed on the alternate list last Monday June2nd and accepted June 6th.
Good luck!!

Hey Skijag,
Did you do or send anything that might have swayed them to accept you? Were you on the high priority alternate list?

I wasn't on the HP waitlist but on the alternate list. I did write two Letters of intent. I'm super excited about going to downstate. Best of luck to you!

Hey skijag, great to hear you will be at Downstate, congrats. Physics, hopefully you'll get some good news soon, I'm rootin' for you.

Thanks Medguy,
Hopefully the committee will come to their senses soon and let me in (he he),
I hate waiting!! Perhaps I should follow skijag's example and write another letter of intent. I called the other day and talked to a Ms. Murray to make sure they had received a few things, along with a letter of intent I sent 3 weeks ago. At first she couldn't even find it! Doesn't give me much confidence that the committee actually read it. I wonder if those letters just get stuffed into your file and never looked at until someone happens to glance at it.

Hey Kids -

I know I've put off-campus housing info up on some of the other Downstate threads....I've been living in a neighboorhood about a 15 minute walk from Downstate for a little over two years. I know the area pretty well. Its not like I can hook anyone up with an apartment or anything, but if anyone has apartment hunting questions or wants info/advice on looking, I'm happy to provide what help I can.

I'm with MedGuy re the school-bashing. It might not be a pretty area, but I've felt just as safe around here as anwhere else in the city. I'm psyched to be going there, and if I can help my fellow classmates get into it by maybe helping people get acclimated to Brooklyn, I will.

So, PM me if you want my $.02 on the housing situation.

Oh, anyone else out there going for the concurrent MPH? Starting in the fall or the summer?

Hi Bridgie. Pleasantly surprised to see you on this board. Haven't seen you on the International board for ages. What happened to Ireland? Have you been accepted to medical school this year?
