Hello there, I have a friend who wanted me to ask you guys a couple of questions about his chances.

His stats are:

3.00 at a community college, 7 w's 1 d 2 c's
4.00 at 4 year university- all throughout his junior and senior year
40Q Mcat score

He is Urm and disadvantaged.

Does he still have a good chance at applying for schools?

He is worried about his cc grades and all the withdraws.

Actually lol I am serious. This is not a troll thread. I just wanted to ask. Plz don't flame me. I'm guessing he does have a chance.

No flames, but it's pretty obvious that your "friend" has a chance. How good of a chance? No one here can tell you.

3.0 GPA at CC isn't an application killer, especially combined with a 4.0 at a university. 40Q MCAT is like above above above average for a DO applicant.

As long as his cGPA and sGPA are above 3.0, he has put in time towards volunteering, shadowing, etc, and he has a C or greater in the pre-reqs, he's fine.

DO Schools don't really care too much about URM or disadvantaged (I don't think). Not like MD schools do.

Wtf? 40q? I would give up a kidney for a 40q. I think med schools will accept you with a 40 regardless what college you went to or the gpa you received. He could have went to a community college and still get into Yale. Over exaggerating, but still

He took a year off to study for it. He started by just learning all the material by himself then taking the 4 year university courses, then studying for the mcat for 3 months and he got it. I would also give up a kidney.

Ok thank you. He was worried about his 7 w's and bad grades at the cc.

They will probably ask about that stuff at an interview, but it gives him a chance to give a triumphant "I got my **** together speech"

3.5 average gpa + 40 mcat = don't even apply to DO.

Given the fact that he's a URM, and has a ~3.5 gpa and 40 mcat, I would literally say do not apply DO. Tell your friend to apply to Harvard, Yale, Colombia, etc., with a few safety MD schools. He shouldn't have even the slightest problem going to a top 10 med school, also assuming he has the expected ECs.

I'd give up a kidney to go to a middle-tier MD school of my choice.. not for a 40Q, not even for a 45T.

Won't the 7 w's hold him back? and the 3.00 at the cc?

I think you're missing the part where he got Ds and Cs at a CC. The 40 MCAT probably dispels any questions about his intelligence, but the poor CC grades brings into question his work ethic and commitment. I don't doubt he'll get in to an MD school, but probably not top 10 programs.

He has a good chance anywhere. URM and dat GPA and dat MCAT... the 7 W's and C-Ds during CC don't mean jack since he stepped it up and got 4.0 at university. If they ask, he should say he was immature, lost, unsure about his direction in life, then he stepped it up and nailed it.

inb4 harvard acceptance.

URM and Disadvantaged status will help your friend very much.

He's in the 99th(99.5-99.8) percentile with his MCAT score, and his writing is above average(66.6-84.8). This is a very strong score and it will serve him well.

Whenever one has difficulties with grades, adcoms love seeing upward trends, which your friend has a strong one.

He may have to explain the withdrawals, but other than that, he's golden for anywhere he wants to go.

He does have some ECs, right..?

I'm only a high schooler, but I'm a frequent lurker of these sorts of boards. x3

Wrong...At least they care about AA.

The reason for the 7 W's was because his father left him and his mom homeless. He lived in his car with his mom for couple months before they could afford a place. He worked two jobs in order to help pay rent.

His EC's are average.
