Does how marketable you are depend that much on reputation of program?

I am just wondering from an employer's POV(whether it be for a post-doc position or academic research position after post-doc) how heavily weighed is the reputation of the clinical program. Does coming out of a top rated program at least get your foot in the door for an interview? what if you came from an amazing lab where the PI (and therefore you) are productive and the program is still great but not one of the top - would that make you stand out more than someone who came from a really great program but w/o as many publications?

I know it's not the easiest question to answer (and perhaps there is no answer to it) because most of the time it really depends on a host of other factors, but if this answer could in any way be generalized and made simple...is the reputation of the lab you work in more important than the reputation of the program? or vice versa? or weighed equally?

thanks for the input! i understand that everyone will feel differently about this but i just like to know what everyone's thoughts are.

From what I understand (which may be very little 🙂) your own publication record is the most important factor in securing an academic-research position. However, having connections via your advisor doesn't hurt. I don't think just coming from a "top program" will even get your foot in the door if you don't have your own publication record. Just my opinion though!
