Does independent research done for credit count as a course?

Hi I did independent research at my university which gives P/NP credit as a course although no real classwork was done. Does getting a LOR from the PI count as a LOR from a science professor? thanks

If it's on your transcript, it probably counts as a course.

They prefer that you were taught an actual class by your science LOR, so they can see how well you handled the rigors of a science class. However, if your PI knows you really well and gives you a great LOR, and your research was science worthy, go for it.

It's like getting an LOR from an MD you did research w/, they expect it to be about shadowing but instead it is about how mature and great you are at critical thinking. Still from a great souce just different emphasis.
