I would think a call every week or two would actually help. You would look persistant. If you made 14 calls in 2 days, that looks psycho. That's my opinion, anyways.

I would highly discourage you from doing that. The dean of admissions of the School of Pharmacy at VCU had said during an intro to pharm class that I took that it looks very unprofessional. It might not really help at all. If it has any effect, it could very well be negative. Calls about the program or requirements are no problem, but calling with questions about when your application will be reviewed, etc. might be irritating if you do it too frequently. Just use your best judgement...

I have a question..........and the more i think about it the more i get puzzled...

when u call the school to ask a question and they ask for your name, does that count against you.


i mean....ok ..i got put on wait list on of the colleges that i applied to....and so just out of curiosity i just called them and asked if they have started looking at the wait list...first i talked to a secretary and she asked for my name....then she told me that i can talk to the assistant dean if i have any question....so i kept calling the assistant dean for 2 days...and finally i got her hold....and the first question that i was asked was..."what's your name"....i told her my name....and she was like..."i am sorry, darling...what is it again...so i spelled it out..slowly"

now my concern is.....will that count against me.....or am i just completely paranoid....... 😕 😕 ..........or u think it might be a good thing for me....because they knowmy name and that i am still interested in them ....and just trying to keep up to date


please..............any one....reply me back with any comments....i am just stressing myself out like crazy....now i think that i should never have called them to begin with..... 🙁

I think it is great to get your name out there...it worked for me. I called UF almost every week and they knew my name by heart..I was below the "cut off" and I got my acceptance letter last month. If that story doesnt calm you down..listen to this..I kept calling nova to find out my status and they never picked up their phone..so I drove over there and they looked at my file right there and they gave me an interview date...I called a friend of mine and told him to go to nova to find out his status..so he did and they called him the same day and gave him an interivew date. So dont worry..its good to be on the ball.

I agree it's good. I spoke with the Dean's of 2 schools at length on a couple occasions and got into both.

In "Real" life, you are expected to follow up on job applications and be assertive. Larger schools like Chapel Hill will ask you in writing to please not call, but that was unique of them out of the 3 I applied to. Just like if/when you are accepted, it is favorable for you to stop by your professor's office when you can to see how you can do better in the class and establish a rapport.

In my opinion, I imagine several people call. Why not?? You are showing that you want to be there. From personal experience, if someone called every week just to get info, etc. I would kind of root for them to get in rather than someone who hasn't even bother. Now if the person called me daily, I would think they were nuts. Play your cards, just cautiously.

the next time u call, try to see if they have the "oh, no. not him again" attitude.
if they do, call less.
i think emailing is better. email doesn't scream urgent but it doesn't make them feel "harassed" either. 🙂

I actually got a job this way. I called a few times and fortunately called within minutes of the other guy turning down the job, so he threw me a bone. He only intended on havine me teach one course, but I ended up developing courses and teaching a bunch of courses. It worked out well. I dont' think it looks bad at all. It lets them know that you are serious.

hey everyone....

ya......i have only called there..just once....i have talked to the secretary couple of time..i think she knows me by my name by now.........becuse i called her many times during the interview process....but i have talked to her about wait list just once.........and also to the dean....just once...

so i can take from all this posts that i should not be paranoid about this issue anymore right......??

and i'll probably not call there again ...........

thanks everyone....for clearing this confusion and making me feel better........i don't know what i would do without this forum...

i called to ask if decisions had been sent out because it had been like 6 weeks since my interview. at first the lady seemed annoyed and was like "do you have any particular reason that you need to know NOW?" luckily i had a reason for calling...the mail at my dorm has been getting lost and mixed up so i told her that i wanted to make sure it had not been lost (if it had been sent already) so she looked up my file and i asked her if they could send it to my permanent address instead of my dorm address. from then on she was really friendly... maybe because i had a valid excuse?

Quick question about the difference between being respectful of their request and being assertive to increasing the chances of you being accepted.

I have a friend who is waitlisted at a pharm school. Clearly in her letter it states that she is to only contact them one time per month (whether it is an email or letter or phone call).

Is it better to respect their wishes: only contact one time a month

or

Is it better to contact every other week so that they know you're very interested in getting in still this year?

If you have to ask this question then contact them every day to make sure they know your name.

It's not a bad thing to use your brain every once in a while.
