Just wondering if it matters what medical school I went to in Canada? I'm from Calgary, and thinking about going to the medical school at U of C. But from the MD rankings I saw that U of Alberta ranks much higher than u of C. But I also need to consider about the cost living if I move to Edmonton. So can anyone who's been thrrough the similar situation tell me how to decide? Does it really matter what Medical School I go to as long as I get my MD degree? And also that if a povince has tendency to hire physicians who've graduated from the med school of its own? Tons of Thanks 🙂👍

As long as you got an LCME approved allopathic program, it really does not matter what school you go to, your medical school becomes an issue if you go outside of North America.

Before becoming too picky - I suggest you actually try and get into one of the above schools first.

It is difficult enough to get into a med school, let alone trying to pick which one.

If you get into, and graduate from, any med school in Canada, you are pretty much going to be OK.

Residency programs associated with med schools sometimes give preference to their own, so if you really want to settle down in a given city, you might want to go to school there. And some people yak about the prestige of their respective schools, but really, all the Canadian schools are quite good. It's not like the US where there is a much larger variation.

Just curious from your post, are you 18? ie. 1989... If so, worry about undergraduate first. You should be focussing on getting really high marks. If you're trying to decide which undergrad school to goto based on your desire to also goto med school there, well pick a good school, a fun city and a program you like. Otherwise, it won't matter.

good luck.
