Does Letter of Interest do anything?

Rad Onc only had 4 signals. My partner just got a new job in a different city and I didn't signal nor geopreference a place I would love to go in this area. I was thinking of sending two emails indicating my interest and reason to two programs in the city. Rad Onc is a small field so I thought this may have some weight (would be meaningless in psych or IM for example) but wanted to ask.

Most questions about LOI were asked before signaling, so idk if anything has changed. Please do tell me if this would be viewed negatively.

I’m not RO but I’ve set in on interview/rank committees and I think this would definitely not hurt, and would maybe help.

Probably the lower “tier” the program the more it would be likely to help, might go a lot farther with Baylor than MDACC across the street for example.
