So I am contemplating whether I should be doing another gap year or doing a 2 years masters (free with stipend). My application I guess doesn't need any improvements that I am currently not doing now, I just happened to apply a bit later relative to international student standards (I'm Canadian). It's not that I wouldn't mind doing masters, but I would rather do a masters and get a degree rather than do a gap year that won't build my CV for the long run. Thus will masters significantly help being more competitive for residencies?

I was also thinking of applying for med, via EDP for a specific school, and doing my first year masters. If I get into medical school, I will drop my masters and continue from there. Does that sound feasible to consider?

If you get in you can probably defer and finish the mph degree.

Can I? That would actually be awesome if I can! Btw its not an MPH degree, its a clinical research based masters, but really similar.

Some schools put a condition on any acceptance saying you must finish any currently enrolled graduate program.

If you want to go to medical school, why are you doing a research masters? Being that your Canadian, I'm assuming you have a good GPA and MCAT score - you should be asking yourself why you got 0 interviews this cycle. Call the schools you applied to and ask if they have any feedback. In my opinion, a masters that is not a SMP geared towards mimicking the first year of medical school is a waste if you are dead set on becoming a physician. I know plenty of friends that did a research masters with a 4.0 - it didn't help them while applying.

I mean what was your Bachelor's in?

Chemistry - useless without a PhD (stuck being a lab tech) <-- my degree was in chemistry so I know
Biology - same thing
Biochemistry - more job opportunities as a lab tech, but still you are a tech and need to climb up the ranks if you get a job at a pharmaceutical company. Still need higher degree to be research/group leader/coordinator
Engineering - Master's will get you a good paying job.

My bachelor's is in Molecular Biology. I am currently working as a clinical research assistant, and I probably won't be able to continue this next year if I don't do a masters, as my supervisor really wants a masters student in his team, which is contingent for me to stay after Sept 2020.
