I'm leafing through Isserson's residency book ever so often. He has this table that ranks what each specialty considers important criteria for a candidate. Pathology and psychiatry both rank med school rep higher than other specialties do. Path an psych rank it like #4 (of 14 criteria) whereas surg and IM rank it 9 or 10. What has been your experience? Does med school rep matter more for path than for other specialties. I am not really path bound at this point (i'm just starting med school this fall) but I am curious about this school thing. Path PDs also rank preclinical grades more highly than other specialties. Path seems to be the most science driven specialties and I am just curious to learn about how programs percieve these different criteria.

I found Isserson's to be crap as it concerned path. I did about as bad as you can do in my first two years and I still ended up in my first choice. And I didn't exactly go to Harvard for med school either.

I'd agree with Jim Bob. From what I remember, even from the old medschool.com forums, one of the biggest factors about pathology seemed to be if you were genuinely interested in it. If you'd done OK in school, didn't really matter where, you had your pick of residency. Of course, I'm sure the climate has changed in the past two years, but nonetheless, I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

And if it does, then IMO that tells you more about the residency program than the propaganda they'll give you during your interview.
