Hey Guys,

Does the "name" or "reputation" of the dental school matter now? I mean seriously, how many patients ask a dentist what school did they attend? Please give me your opinion.

some will care. other won't. it just comes down to how good of a job you do. my uncle went to temple (i know temple gets a bum rap on here) but he is a darn good dentist and all of his patients love him.

so unless your patient is a pre-dent, knows a dentist or is a dentist themselves or unless you went to harvard or some wickedly prestigious school. it's not going to matter to the patient. they'll be more concered with your skill then your schooling.

las vegas over wherever the hell case is.. DEFINITELY

I have come to the realization that no one on planet earth cares more about what school you go to then predents! We are a bunch of *****s!!

Seriously though, it makes little difference especially if you plan on being a general dentist. I'm not sure how much it will play in specializing. I guess I'll figure that out in 4 years.

It does not matter one bit what school you graduated from - maybe to other dentists, but probably not even them. Word of mouth is what brings patients in the door, which is related to the quality of the dental work and the practice in general.

plus there you can take your financial aid check and put it all on black! and try to double it!

When I was doing my shadowing the office was shared by two dentists that had been working together for over five years and were friends outside of the office as well. The two of them didn't even know where the other went to dental school. I think that we pre-dents worry about the prestige of our schools waaaay too much.

Let me ask you this. Doctor A has the reputation of being a superb doctor.
Doctor B has the reputation of graduating from Harvard.

Now, you're really really sick. To whom would you rather go?

neither i will go where the insurance will pay 😉

Here is where it matters the most:

THE AMOUNT OF DEBT

See really smart people figure this out quickly; the return on investment is extremely poor when talking dentistry.

Now there is a valid argument in other academic and professional areas. See: Math -MIT, Agriculture- Iowa State, Partying- Madison, Wisconsin  .

what matters most is your personality, you could make the worst MO amalgam or composite on a molar and theyll never know, but if you are nice theyll keep coming. hopefully you'll be doing good preps though too 🙂

I COMPLETELY AGREE. I have shadowed a dentist for the last 3 years and he does a horrible job on so many things and to be honest, nobody knows the difference. The thing they notice most is how personable he is and how good of an experience he does his best to make them have and guess what, it works. He stays very business and is one of the most prominent dentists in an area that is very difficult to be successful in.

Yes, It does matter if you're a minority and planning to practice in a homogeneous suburban.

Hello there,

The name of the school where you got your degree DOES matter at first impression only for some people. Others simply do not care! It is how well you treat the patient in terms of patient management and quality of work that puts your reputation at risk. However, one of my dentist friends who works with me graduated from Havard and yesterday, a patient of mine said to me " wow, he is from Havard so I bet you come and ask him for advice sometimes right? I heard that's the top dental school in the world!" No kidding here. So the name does matter to SOME people. DP
