I recently completed 18 weeks of externship program and wondering if the programs will appreciate it or not. I will apply all over US and wish to get a position.😀

Out of curiosity, what is an externship? Is that another term for an away sub-I/AI?

Wow, that's really long externship! When I did mine I was told that they are typically shorter, and that it's more like shadowing. I did very little, if anything. The administration at this particular institution (and my school) told me it was more for my benefit, to see if psychiatry was a good fit.

It sounds like your experience was much more comprehensive, and I imagine at the very least it would help convince prospective sites that you're serious about psychiatry. It seems like it can only be a good thing

Good luck, and I look forward to hearing from the docs on this forum re: your question

It's much better than having no US clinical experience. At least you see how "the system" works, have spent extensive time with psych patients and providers, and hopefully have gotten a decent letter or two.

Yes they will if you did a good job and get good letters of recommendation. It shows interest and commitment. It will also give you good material for essays and for your interviews.

Thank you all for your valuable inputs.

This externship includes rotations in C&L Psychiatry, Psych ER, Inpatient Psych and Addiction Psychiatry units. Very extensive hands-on experience.Weekly Didactic classes and Psychiatry Interviewing skill class and Psychology class. We even did presentation at the end of our externship for our research review paper.

ELOVL4, that sounds like a fantastic experience you did for your 4 month psych externship! Was that at MUSC by chance?
