Does ranking matter after top 30?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
between 40 and 60? Probably not but between 31 and 110, depending on the parameters, there would be a sizeable difference.

depends on the schools in comparison. For example, UF is ranked around 40 and USF is ranked 56. But anyone who lives in Florida knows that UF is much better in terms of research ,residency and reputation.

I have to disagree, I'm from Florida and among lay people you are right, UF carries more prestige, but in the medical community I don't think one is better than the other.

I disagree. Shand's hospital is a top hospital. If you search the forums, you'll see posts about USF med students complaining about the lack of research opportunities. Most doctor's I've talked to told me UF or UM are the best Florida schools. In 10-15 years, I can see USF being on the same level as UF but currently, I don't think so.

UF has 120 million research dollars and USF has 115 million. Not much of a difference. I'm not saying UF is worse or anything along those lines but if you look at the residents the schools produce I doubt you will see any difference in the competence of the students between a school ranked 60 and 40. In fact, according to us news so take it with a grain of salt, both institutions scored the same on national boards.

Do they actually post research funding on their sites?

If anyone who lives in Florida is referring to the general public, then yes. While UF/UM definitely come out on top in funding and prestige over USF, it doesn't really translate over to a huge difference in the overall experience for med students at each school. I've spent plenty of time at both and have plenty of friends at both; the students by and large complain about the same stuff.

One difference I did notice though is that the UF alumni association is much older and wealthier than its USF counterpart, which often does benefit the students directly. Although, that could be balanced a bit by the fact that the UF administration as a whole loves to nickle and dime its students to death, far more than any other university I've seen.

UFs administration is also super super political which used to drive me nuts.

Like is the difference between 40 and 60th significant?
I don't think so. I would pick the place you like better or location you like better.

For my neck of the woods, nobody would care if you went to UC Irvine or UC Davis or to some extant UC Riverside.
