I used to play an instrument for several years but lessons were getting too expensive and I stopped playing it in college due to my busy schedule. I am currently a junior and planning on taking a gap year. although I play it sometimes in my free time, this summer I am thinking of taking up something different--taking a painting/art class (outside of school). It's something I have never done and I think I would like to pursue art as a real hobby. I am somewhat talented in drawing/art and it would be a great outlet for exploring my creativity, something I rarely get to do nowadays with my rigorous schoolwork and research. Would something like that still count as an extracurricular activity? Thanks.

It sounds like a hobby..why not list it if it means something to you?

Say art itself is the hobby. And maybe say in the description that you took a class to further your interest?

Taking a class makes it a curricular activity. That doesn't mean you can't list it on the application as an Experience. I agree with ciestar that you should mention the class in the context of exploring your larger interest in drawing/art.
