Most schools tend not to allow students to defer unless they have a Rhodes, Fulbright, Marshall, Scholarship, Peace Corps or military commitment, meaningful research (i.e. NIH funded), or a very very good reason to explain why you can't possibly go to med school this year. Basically you're indicating that you werent really serious about applying to med school while many others would kill for your spot. Schools don't like it. But you never know, ask the admissions office.

While it's true that schools do want you to defer for good reason (since you're taking up a spot that you won't actually be using), it doesn't have to be something absolutely earth shattering. I know people that defered to have babies. I know another person who defered because her mother was sick and she wanted to be near her. I also know people that defered to travel (although I don't know what they told adcoms).
