hey guys,
I had a question about applying to both the MD and DO programs of the same school.
For instance, UMDNJ has both an MD and DO school and I have applied to both programs. In my essay for the DO school, I explain my strong interest in osteopathic medicine and even state that for me DO schools are a first choice (that is true by the way). However, I also applied to their MD school since it is in state for me and I really just want to give myself as many options as possible.

So...I am worried that UMDNJ's DO admissions will see that I also applied to their MD program, and then doubt how serious I am about osteopathy. Is this a ridiculous concern? Are they completely separate entities for all intents and purposes and thus admissions from 1 program have nothing to do with admissions from the other program? I am probably being paranoid, but just thought I would throw the question out there. Thanks.

The same question can be asked about the different campuses of the same school (i.e. LECOM, Touros, Midwesterns, and Westerns). You even submit applications through the same portals on some of them. I got rejected from one LECOM school and an interview to another. So, to answer your question, I doubt the colleges will be bouncing back and forth, unless they directly ask you, I would act like they are separate entities and express your enthusiasm for both independently of each other.
I hope that helps in a round about way.

No it won't be a problem. I doubt it'll even come up because you won't be the first person to do this. It is a problem however if you're applying to the MD or DO program at a university and then apply to the same university during the same cycle for a dental program or PA program though.

No, they wouldn't know it is two different application services.

They want you to be into osteopathic medicine, but UMDNJ is also a state school and want to produce physicians for New Jersey. Even if they knew you applied to the MD schools, they'd probably be happy to see you're trying to stay in New Jersey. 🙂

Seriously. Most state schools primary objective is to train physicians to practice in that state. I can't imagine they'd be anything but happy to see you apply to more in state schools.
