From what I have heard, Norway has a very respectable healthcare system and a very healthy supply of successful physicians. However, per reading the bigotry against DO's worldwide, I found the following text rather disturbing. Why doesn't the AOA do something about this? Why is it so difficult to prove the competency of osteopathic medicine?

Norway

Year of Last Request: 1990
Scope of Practice: limited to manipulation

Although D.O.s are able to obtain a license to practice only manipulation in Norway, they are not permitted to use the title "doctor" and all osteopathic services are not covered for payment under Norway's socialized medicine system

That's really funny. I wonder what they would call me if I go there since I'll be DO/Ph.D. Still not a doctor?

I'm sure AOA is working to resolve some issues. I have been told that AOA is working with WHO to provide more practice rights internationally for American trained DOs.

Come on THIS IS OLD NEWS BUDDY !!!!!!!! DO's hold the same respect and authority world wide as MD's. We are on the verge of taking over main stream medicine. There is a big patient movement towards DO's. YOu watch. Norway, schnorway. If you petition that country they will give you rights equal to an MD PLUS manipulation. DOn't worry about it.

It's the same in Britain. But quite honestly, DO schools in Britain emphasize manipulation above all else, so it's not too surprising. From what I know, American DO schools are the exception in emphasizing evidence-based medicine.

From what I have read, Britain's DO's practice much more like chiropractors than actual physicians. Hence, they have no way of maintaining the difference between an American Osteopathic Physician and an ill-trained British Osteopathic chiropractor. I can hear it already from patients in the UK..."So Dr. Sososo, were you trained to be a competent physician or a mockery of medicine?" That's the Brits for ya.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that "osteopaths" in europe are trained soley as manipulaters and do not go through "medical school" like we do here in the us. This is why they only manipulate.

True. Our training in the US has far more in common with US allopathic schools than foreign DO schools. Actually, our education probably more closely resembles foreign allopathic than foreign osteopathic institutions.

BTW- "DO" in Britain stands for "Diplomat of Osteopathy".
