which schools are more competitive (not in the strength of their programs, but in the way students interact)? im a pre-med thinking about where im going to apply. i know all med students are competitive, but id rather go to a place where students help each other more than they fight each other. specifically , does anyone know anything about any of the massachusetts schools, upenn, northwestern, cornell, or colombia?

your best bet is to look at how grading is done at each respective school that you are interested in..... p/f, h/p/f, letter grades, grading during clerkship years, etc. this information is accessible in med school profile books that can be found in a bookstore.

also look to see if the school grades on a set scale, or if they grade on a bell curve. bell curves creat competitiveness while numerical grades don't.

Also check out the ritalin page. It seems like there are some people who are so damn competitive that they take performance enhancing drugs to get above the competition. 😱

Yup. We were VERY competitive...

Who got the drunkest... 🙂

Honors/Pass/Fail: competative. You are competing against classmates every 5 weeks.

Pass/Fail: Not so much

I'm so competitive that I drug myself before class so that I fall asleep during class so that I miss out on the material. Often, I find myself shredding my own notes. And I almost lie to myself about the amount of time I've spent studying. My subconcious doesn't want to have to compete against my concious.

And more often than not, I have come to realize that I lost my mind ages ago.

I dislike the competitiveness.. its what makes people go down into Adderol and ritalin..

ah.. sux

Also some schools will have competition due to the Adderall vs. Concerta dilemma. Since 100% of medical students should take (if they haven't already started) such drugs illegally to boost performance, many schools have become divided along Adderall vs. Concerta lines. This manifests in well-choreographed, but highly competitive dance-offs in dark alleyways in NY, I mean in the anatomy lab.

I think the students at top schools are less competitive because people don't worry about getting a residency somewhere as much. Med students will be competitive no matter where you go though.
