Dog Transition

Hey everyone,
A similar question has been asked, but i wanted to ask for my situation. I got a pup for my 16th birthday. 2 years later I left for college across the country in NC. Next year I graduate and I want to take my dog with me when I go to Vet school, or wherever I wind up going. Anyway, My dog has spent this time while I was at college, with my dad mostly and He is very protective of my family. Will my dog be able to make the transition to living with only me and in a new place? Also, I know my parents dont have the time to train a new dog, so should I just leave my pup at thome and start over? I just feel like my dog does not understand why I left. I think he thinks that I abandoned him. I go home about once a year, and he gets so excited, but then when I leave, i know he knows that i am going and I really think he gets sad. So what should I do?

I think it really depends on the dog and which situation do you think he will respond best to. I'm in a similar situation except I have two dogs (Romper and Patches) and my mom has two dogs (Ginger and Ruffles). I'm come home twice a year (Christmas time and summer). When I graduate next year if I can find an apartment that allows pets I will only take Romper because she has bonded to me stronger than to anyone else. I think she already knows I'm leaving again because she has become very clingy to me even though I still have a week and a half. Patches, however, would do a lot better staying with my mom because she likes my mom better and has also bonded well with Ginger. I actually might end up taking Ruffles with me even though he is my mom's dog because he is getting older and requires care that I would be more willing to give him.

Every dog and person is different. Who is the dog more bonded to and who is the most bonded to the dog?
