  1. Resident [Any Field]
i'm currently applying to residency and debating whether i should stay or leave my current institution. it is a great program, and i like it here (close to family), but i've been told that doing all your training at one institution can handicap you in terms of career progression. i have however found a few other excellent programs where i could definitely see myself training.

for what it's worth, i'm probably going to pursue a fellowship and will most likely stay in academic medicine. if i do stay here for residency, i will most likely try to stay here for fellowship as well.

anyone have any thoughts?

I think that concerns about this are overstated. Move if there is something you want elsewhere or it would be better for your life to be somewhere else. Otherwise, if you're happy at your home program and it's a good one, I don't believe one needs to move for "career progression." I do think that if it is feasible to move, then anyone should look around and apply broadly, but, if the home program is the winner otherwise, and of course, if they like you, stay home.

Agreed. It's good to see how other institutions do things, but there's nothing wrong with staying where you are. You won't be handicapped. Just remember that there's nearly always another 'right' way to do something.
