OK, so i'm just a few years out of residency and at this point in my career i feel i wanna do "everything." i enjoy taking care of a variety of patients and the spectrum of complexity, including hearts, heads, ob, pedi, etc. but the hospitals that have such cases are generally in poor payor mix areas and the pay is 👎. This early in my career should my focus be on paycheck only and not worry about what types of cases i'm getting to do?

Basically i'm asking you guys who've been part of many groups and worked at various hospitals - does the intellectual challenge of doing a variety of cases keep you from getting bored or does it not matter? Let's say it's the same number of hours worked - is it better (in the sense of warding off ennui with your work) to do "everything" for less pay, or joint replacements and spine cases all day, every day for $$$? I realize it probably really comes down to individual preferences and what matters most to that person, but i'd like to hear some thoughts from guys who've been doing this for a long time.

I basically do anything except for open heart. I'll do cases from AAA to thoracic to a cataract. I am in a fixed salaried 7-5 position, so I could really care less what I am doing. I've been out a couple of years like you.
