Okay so my overall gpa was a 2.78 which I know isn't that great , but I went from a 1.78 gpa to a 2.66 then to a 3.22 gpa . Now this semester I dd poorly again. I did poorly because the first week of school I found out my best friend was in a coma . I went to go see her everyday instead of school. Within a month she passed away which made me very depressed. I know I shouldn't blame all my bad grades on this but later in the semester I found out I had a breast tumor and I am a leukemia survivor and this was my second tumor . For sure I thought this was cancerous . My parents were out of the country and I didn't know what to do except go to the doctors myself and cry. I didn't try at all this semester and ended up with a 1.13 gpa . I don't know if I should continue with going with pre med but it's my dream. Can someone give me advice on what to do ? Please ?

I'm a sophomore as well. You still have two years to improve your GPA. I had a rough semester too and I'm repeating 3 classes. My mom and I are losing our house so I had to work like crazy to save for a new place to live. Take summer classes (I don't recommend taking science classes in the summer though), retake the courses that you got a bad grade in. It will show that you made the effort to improve. Obviously those old grades will still be there, but its better to repeat them than to not. I'm not sure what your timeline is like for graduation, but for me, I'm probably not going to graduate with a bachelors within a time frame of four years. I had no idea what I wanted to do when I first started college and just took random classes until I figured out I loved science. But my point is that don't be upset if you need an extra semester to get your grades straightened out. Don't freak out just yet. You have time. Stay focused and don't get distracted from your studies. If you do that you should be fine. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much ! I really appreciate all the advice you have given me . Yeah I'm most likely going to take summer classes . Why do you say not to take science over the summer ?

I am so sorry that all happened to you. life is very unfair. I honestly think you have PLENTY of time to increase your gpa dramatically. retake the classes you did poorly in and I bet you can come out with a 3.4 at least.
Also, if you are applying DO they have grade forgiveness so the bad grades don't get counted only the retakes do. If you push hard enough you can do it! I have absolutely no doubt in my mind.

You might consider petitioning the dean for a retroactive withdrawal for the entire term. Sometimes this works and wipes the slate clean. Bring documentation. Don't return to school until you're ready to excel again.

Thank you so much . Honestly I know I can try harder but this semester drastic things just hit me . Honestly thank you very much! @littlegreen88

@catalystik even if the semester is over I can do this ?

I did this for a semester when my mom passed away. You can definitely come back in a couple months and have the petition go smoothly, provided you have evidence.

Definitely withdraw retro-actively and take time off until you know you're okay to excel. I wish you well and hope you make it to med school.

Stop going to school right now, PERIOD. You need to give yourself time to heal, both emotionally and physically from what you've gone through. You will need to have someone other than yourself guide you through this. Your school counseling center will be able to do this for you for little or no cost. If there is any trouble with you taking a semester off with getting your counseling paid for, have your Dean of Students fight that battle for you.

If you get the help you need, you will experience a night and day difference in your ability to focus on school, retain your coping strategies and give your family time to build on what the professionals that helped you get through the majority of this will have laid the foundation for. The growth of your GPA will only be matched by your growth as a person and this is what medical schools are looking for.

I sincerely wish you the best and please know that there are many people who go through this in pre-med, medical school and in residency and they all find their way and so will you.

Very sad to hear your story OP. As the quoted posters mentioned, you need to take the time off. It's better for yourself. Take Catalystik's advice by retroactively withdrawing your semester grades. Sure, it may take longer for you to graduate, but med school isn't going anywhere. Take some time to stay calm and to move on from the unfortunate tragedy. Once you feel better and confident, then move on to the classes. Best of luck.
