Hey all,

Currently I am working on some interesting psych research which is definitely publishable. For anonymity's sake, we have found a very interesting link in a certain patient population with psych illness and we have a case series of about 20 patients we are looking to publish.

The N isn't huge but we think it is very interesting - do you know where we could publish it with a quick turnaround?

Once we have the first paper out we can apply for a institutional grant which would allow us to ramp up our study. However, my mentor is retiring soon so time is of the essence.

Thank you for all your help!

Does "we" include someone who has experience publishing case studies? The process is also far from quick, at least for peer-reviewed journals. Going through the submission/review process is a worthwhile endeavor for students, so I hope you are able to do it.

Thanks for your response. We is my mentor and myself - he publishes a decent amount in peer reviewed journals (one going to JAMA as we speak!) but doesn't really do case series' so it will be working through it. And yes, nothing peer-reviewed is quick
What I meant was something with a fast turnaround in comparison to other journals. Do you have any suggestions for journals?

Thanks!

I have published in Frontiers in Psychiatry in the past and found them to be fairly quick in terms of review turnaround. They also have an option where you can request a paper pending publication. Their online submission process is pretty easy to navigate.

Do these cases involve psychopharmacology? If so, Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology has a relatively quick turnaround.

I guess that I should have clarified about the cases:

Without being too specific, they are about a segment of society that come in for one problem unrelated to pysch (say, heart disease) and we have found that in all males of Antartic decent there is a history of risky behavior.

Note: that is completely made up but it is similar to the situation we have. There is no psychopharm involved, just that realization. This has never been shown before.

Thank you for all your help all - I will check out the frontiers journal and anything else you have to offer.

Sorry to keep pestering you guys, but I was wondering if anyone else had journal suggestions?

Thanks,
Pandoraone

Typically case series do best in things like the subspecialty journals. Since you don't feel comfortable sharing much about the case content, it's hard to direct you to the journals that are appropriate.

Agreed

I see what you are saying. What we are looking for is something like the Mayo Clinic proceedings Brief Report Heading:

Brief Report. A Brief Report will typically address an early report or observation of relevance to clinical medicine or medical science. This category is not intended to present preliminary data on structured, ongoing research but instead is intended to present unanticipated or extremely novel observations that may encourage others to perform related research or reassess their clinical practice.

Do you know of any journals in psych that would publish this? The project changed slightly to a retrospective chart review with N=28-9 and most journals aren't open to such low N's. That is what something like this is what we need.

If you can help or know osmething like it it would be great
