So I have this semi-stupid/semi-unfortunate situation in which I stuck my foot in my mouth via an email with the PD of my first choice on the day before he was going to make up the ROL. I basically misread a joke of his, took it too seriously and wrote back this monologue on the subject and got a reply of basically "I was joking, you're reading too much into it." I tried to laugh it off and reply with humor, and it wouldn't bother me very much except for the timing of it all. Otherwise, prior to this I think he had a pretty good impression of me overall.

My question is, how much do you think a minor infraction/miscommunication like this will affect a PD's overall decision regarding ranking, if at all? I know it's kind of stupid, but it was just horrible timing. 🙄

Disclaimer: current applicant.

Dont worry about it. As long as you replied normally in humor, its okay. PDs know this is an anxious time for you as well - and most of them will take it within their stride. Think of it this way - you are going to have bad days, and you would possibly like to work under a PD who is cool enough to take things lightly 🙂. DEFINITELY state your interest in his program in whatever communication you have with him. Which basically should convey the message that,"though I make stupid comments every now and then and look into things way too much, I completely love your program from the bottom of my heart." I guess thats really the best you can do in such situations.

All the best! Hope you match into your favorite program!

I would take a deep breath and relax. Assuming that 1) The PD you are referring to had a favorable first impression of you 2) He is among the vast majority of people who tend to form strong first impressions of people and then only minimally alter their opinions of them regardless of subsequent incidents and 3) you didn't curse him out or say something about his momma - then you shouldn't worry that much. Don't make a big deal about it or bring it up in another e-mail because it sounds like you settled the issue and continually reminding him of it may make him think you are insecure. Just stay calm and everything will work out. Best of luck!
