Well this stung a bit. I have worked for the State of Michigan as a student assistant to get me through my undergrad. Its a boring cubicle desk job...you guys know, one of those jobs that is the exact opposite of what we want to do..right?? lol Anyways, I was offered a $17/hour job with benefits and vacation time today...However, I told them I would gladly take it, but I start graduate school this August. Obviously, they wanted someone more permanent and long-term so I had to respectfully turn this job offer down. It stings a bit because I could definitely have used the money right now. (We all can...) But I think of it like this... I start at $17/hour at a cubicle job right now...i goes up to $22/hour capped. It would be the best decision if I DIDNT get into grad school. Fortunately, I got in somewhere. So its $17/hour now with benefits and vacation time but sitting in a cubicle all day do government paperwork for housing...OR wait 3 years, start somewhere around $65,000/w beneifts and do what I want to do...

Life.

you could have taken the job and tell them in July you're leaving for graduate school. business is business, nothing personal...and you would have had a job. I told my boss I was leaving my position at an elementary school before the end of the school year. And they are perfectly happy for me, because if your boss is any bit humane he/she would understand. I definitely understand your logic too, but I think either decision would have been ok.

Call me greedy, but I would've taken the job and told them I'm starting grad school later this year. I don't think you made a wrong decision though. Congrats on the acceptance, by the way.

I know the struggle! I've been a sales assistant for years now in different departments of my company. I've been approached on a few occassions about why I don't want to move into management. I've always known PT school is the goal. I've finally got in for the fall and had the "talk" with my boss today about wanting to transition to a PRN position that will have less responsibilities and demand. Hoping to keep an on call status with my company. I work hotels so the discount would be nice to have during grad school.

I was in a similar situation as you and I responded the same way. I let my place of employment know well in advance what my intentions were and I let them know soon after I received an acceptance that I would be leaving later in the year.
They were happy for me and let me stay until I decided it was my last day, basically.

I think you did do the right thing, even though the majority of people like to tell me I should have surprised the company 2 weeks before I was leaving.

Yeah, it was definitely a tough choice. I've worked for this place for three years and they have been extremely good to me... The people in the division that wanted to hire me were extremely nice and I know I could have still taken it without saying anything but I felt like I owed it to them to be honest...Plus, one of my co-workers has 7 children and is going to go for this job now that its officially opened...I think she needs it more than me...haha Hopefully she gets it!

Schnell8 Hope your coworker gets it. I don't know about you but I am a firm believer in karma. Doing the right thing will definitely come back to you in the long run 🙂

I believe in karma as well, but am a firm believer as I have seen it numerous times, that businesses could careless about you. I would have personally take the higher paying position regardless of when you go to graduate school. I would have given them a months notice and then left for your schooling. A month is more than reasonable notice. A personal lesson I have learned many times is, YOU are the only one that can look out for you. A business normally does not care about you. ( I am sure there is expections). Some employers when finding out that you will be leaving might kick you to the curb the day you tell them. I hope this works out in your favor, if your boss lets you stay until you leave, he is a good one.

Yep, I agree with this. I believe in karma also, but if there's anything I've learned while working in the corporate world, it's that you're replaceable. You declined the job and they will find somebody else to fill the position. If you took the job and quit 5 months down the road, they would find somebody to replace you. Business is business.

If they wanted to fire you, would they give you notice? I doubt it. Five months is plenty of time to find someone qualified to fill your position. The business will survive. Take the job.

Techincally, I should have lost my job months ago....I am a student assistant for the housing authority for the Michigan government. Basically, I am suppose to take 18 credits between fall and spring semesters...I graduated from MSU in December of 2011 and retook classes at Lansing Community College Spring last year...I basically asked for an extension of my employment through the summer so I could apply for PT school. My boss has been fantastic about it and HR hasn't gotten after myself or him yet but we did come to the conclusion that I should probably leave by May when my apartment lease ends..Basically, i've been allowed to work here for a year longer than I was suppose to..he's been more than fair to me...Also, the supervisor for the department that wanted to hire me was very nice and told me I was doing great things in the world...so that at least eased the pain...haha

way to leave that juicy part out schnell! anyway, its a good decision for you bc at the end of the night you can look at yourself in the mirror and be proud of the person you are. best of luck
