Has anyone heard from Dominican University yet?

I called them in January to ask regarding the status of my application and they told me that they are waiting for my Physics and Human Anatomy and Physiology grades. If you don't mind me asking, what is your GPA and when did you apply to this school?

I was accepted at the beginning of February. My GPA is a 3.5🙂

which other schools did you apply to ? Will you be attending? Are you a graduate student or are you a bach/master student?

Do you guys know much about Dominican? It's the last school I'm waiting to hear from and I don't know much about it and have been unable to find info about the school or students and alumni to talk to. I want to attend school in the bay area, but there aren't many choices. The choices I do have, aren't very well known and I'm just not sure.

I really like the program at Dominican. I went to an information session last year and fell in love with the program. The drawback is that it is three years, but in talking with alumni and current students they all seem really happy. The instructors seem really great and caring. The area itself is beautiful. Its in Marin County which is phenomenal. Like I said probably the main drawback is that its a three year program instead of two or two and a half year program . Also the rooms are a little older and small. But the program seems strong and they have a lot of connections in the bay area hospitals and different facilities. Right now I am waiting to hear from one more school before I make my decision but I will most likely be attending Dominicans MOT program in the fall. 🙂

Beeme123,

Thanks for your reply and the info. I was a little worried after reading some not so nice things about the school. I was informed that some classes are in the basement of a dorm and that teachers give you assignments and walk off without any instruction. It is great to know there are connections in the bay area. I keep reading that it's a "safe" school, but only one out of the six OT schools in California is ranked and well known anyway. I'm assuming that all of the schools are sufficient since there are so few of them and they are accredited. I'm in love with the bay area, so perhaps I'll visit the school. I agree with you in that I am not thrilled about the idea of a three year program. Seems unnecessary and I like how USC gives you the option of a thesis or exam. Well, congrats to both you an OTSTU on your acceptances.

I've had some other concerns about OT but I will post that in another topic.

Hi,

Does anyone know much about Dominican University? I've been accepted for Fall 2010, and I'm having hesitations about it because of the length. It's the only school I have been accepted to for this year. I don't know much about it... Any opinions or knowledge of the program would be helpful, I just need to make a decision!

What is your undergraduate GPA? When did you apply and when did you hear from them?

I heard it is a "last resort" school because the program is fairly new and the drop out rate is pretty high. I heard from people that their OT program is not one of the best. Also, it is expensive and three years long.

Oh on one forum someone wrote that it was a last resort school and so people are taking that and running with it, but in speaking with people who attend there it sure doesn't seem that way. It also has a waiting list and is becoming very competetive to get in, I've even seen some people on here who haven't gotten in yet or been denied. It's a great program, with graduates who go far. As for last resort, the way things are right now with OT Masters programs receiving an 85% increase in applications from last year I think they are all strong and competetive especially since there are only six in CA and those are all accredited through AOTA. If any Califronia school has a problem it would be Samuel Merritt, just look at the forum, they are very disorganized and rude, there are numerous things things they have done to numerous people that are not okay. When you have several people stating the same types of things about a school there is probably some merritt to it. That program is just not run well. But in this climate if you get in anywhere you should probably go because its only going to get more competitive next year 😉 ... just my opinion of course!

I keep hearing mixed reviews about Dominican. I guess I'm just going to have to visit. I was worried about the "last resort" thing too but perhaps they call it that because it's not a very well known school. I have been told that by practicing OTs that getting into any OT school is great, especially now, so take it and run. I'm still trying to make peace with that. Although, I'm waitlisted at Dominican which was the last school I was waiting to hear from. Was waitlisted at NYU last year and denied this year. It's so frustrating! Haha!

Hi!

I contacted Dominican and they told me that they still have to make a wait list. That is interesting. Well, what is you rank at the wait list? When did you find out you were wait listed?

Yes, I was told that this is the first year they've had to make a waitlist (darn me and my bad timing). Basically, I was told I will be waitlisted once it is created and at that time to send $200 for a deposit in case a space opens up and I believe only students who have completed all prereqs can be waitlisted. I've decided not to apply to any schools unless I've met all their requirements and more. Although they all allow units in progress, it's just too competitive.

Thank you for the information. Good luck to you and keep praying! We have a better chance because we finished our prerequisites. Larry told me that a lot of the students who applied are not even half way done with their prerequisites.

Wow! I had no idea! I just assumed most people were done with prerequisites and that was the reason for so much competition. Makes me feel a little better to know that. Good luck to you as well!

is anyone here doing the bach/master program at Dominican ?

Guess what....I got in the program at Dominican University of CA... It was not my first choice, but I am very happy 🙂 Did you hear back from them yet?

Awesome! You must give me details. So did a space open up? Weren't you on the wait list? Congrats! Are you excited?

well, they told me that a few spots opened up.. i was not on the wait list.. the assistant admissions director gave me a call and told me that i got admitted. I am very happy, relief and excited. Even though it was not my first choice, I am glad I will be able to pursue my goals... Did you hear back from them?

Asianlad,

At this point, I'd be excited too. This is my second year of applications and I'm just ready to start somewhere already, even Dominican (I say that because I don't know enough about the program). I have not heard from them; maybe I should call. I've still been trying to find out more info about this school and the mixed reviews, but no luck. It's a mystery. I wonder if I should just try another year. I have a friend who just got into USC and just did ok in all the prereqs and didn't have a great undergrad GPA. Makes me wonder what these people want. Well, I'm so happy for you. Keep me posted! =)

Dominican filled their class of 25 by the last week of March. Then the accepted students were told to make their registration appointment by calling the week of April 15th. The students were asked to please make their final decisions by May 1st, because Dominican now had a wait list. Any students called after May 1st are being called off the wait list, because some of the original 25 chose to go elsewhere or just made other decisions. Hopefully this gives Wave06 some hope because the wait list is obviously now open and they are calling from it. Congrats to Asainlad and good luck to Wave06 I hope you hear soon

Intheknow,

Wow, thanks for the detailed info! Do you know much about the school or program? I really want to know more about it, as I've heard good and not so good, but all brief opinions. Kinda frustrating....

It is a three years long program and it is research based. In the last year you need to research and defend your thesis. The admissions told me that it will cost approximately $875 (if I am not mistaken) per unit, which adds up to approximately 70K for three years.

Honestly, it is not a bad program because it is accredited. As long as you pass your boards after graduation you should be fine. You should also check their website. Think positive and keep on calling them to follow up. Talk to Larry Schwartz.. I always called him.

Thanks for the info Asianlad. I already knew most of it, I was just looking for some detailed experiences and examples about why the program is good or not good. I've been getting generic answers and there's only so much info you can get from a website.

I just want to make sure I don't make the wrong decision wherever I go. I've also been having doubts because I keep hearing negative things about OT (probably from bitter trolls) but I still don't like it. Taking over 10 prereqs, lots of science, and getting in even more debt is not something I'm doing to be in a profession that will not be respected and get weeded out, as I keep hearing. I just feel very unsettled and it bothers me because I've been working on this for almost two years. Ya know?

Dude, are you serious? I mean OT is a booming profession and in the next 10 years this profession will be on high demand because baby boomers are retiring. The money is pretty good too. It is not a very popular profession and not that many people know about it. It is our job to education people about what OT is. Follow your passion! Did you mean you still don't like OT?

See, that's what I was thinking! Booming field, with the baby boomers and more autism than ever before (sad to say). Two years ago when I told fellow classmates I was pursuing OT, they had no idea what the heck it was. Now I get, "me too" as a response sometimes. Awareness has to be increasing and I read that the AOTA needs more membership and political support to gain the respect of other professions that used to have it hard. I still want to pursue it. I just don't like hearing all the trash talk I see in other forums about OT, how it's disrespected, and will be weeded out by PT. Just rubs me the wrong way when I busted my butt taking basically the same prerequisites for medical school (for some OT programs) and will be getting into more debt for this career. I guess I'm hoping there are other options just in case it doesn't work out. I don't like to be a pessimist, but sometimes you really have to weigh things carefully. Either way, I still love OT and will continue to pursue it. And by "I still don't like it," I was referring to the people who bash the profession. =)

I completely agree with you... It is hard to be optimistic, but you must always have a plan B ready just in case plan A does not work out. Hope for the best and remember that things happen for a reason.

I am glad that OT is slowly becoming a popular profession. We will gain the respect slowly, but we got a lot of work to do. I'll give you a good example. In summer, I was shadowing an OT at a hospital in San Francisco. She told me that she has over 30 years of experience in field. Back in the day, she used to fight with doctors for orders for patient treatment, but now a days everything is completely different and doctors completely support OTs.

I got in! I have no idea what to think right now! I'm happy I got in, but I also still have so many concerns.... Wow!

Have you guys decided to attend dominican in the fall ?

OTSTU,

I'm still on the fence and have very little time. I still have so many questions and concerns and haven't been able to find anyone that attends the school to answer them. Part of me feels I should just go and get it over with. Part of me feels maybe I should wait for a school closer to home so I can stay home and save money. But, I don't want to wait around for the perfect situation and miss out on everything. I think my biggest concern right now is debt and if it's worth it.

I graduated from the OT program at Dominican. The program is accredited through AOTA and, in my opinion, starting to establish itself. However, for students trying to apply to different OT programs, SAn Jose State University is a well-established, highly accredited school and it is much cheaper. Dominican's graduate tuition is $875 per unit. Previous posts have mentioned that Dominican would be the last resort. I think it has alot to do with the cost to attend school there, which means it is not as competitive as SJSU.

Some of the professors are wonderful, but for the most part, it gets a bit frustrating because they don;t seem to coordinate with one another, leaving students confused about what is expected of them. The upside about graduating from Dominican is new grads are able to find jobs instantly (given that they are actively seeking). OT is a great profession and I would highly recommend it. Dominican is a little expensive, but a great program nonetheless.

Silliealy,

Thank you for the info and advice. I'd like to discuss more with you if you don't mind?

Anyone applying for Fall 2011? I have applied and am waiting to hear back. Does anyone know how long the process takes?
