Ok, so I know that there's a work experience section there, but really...

Do the schools really WANT to know about my current waitress job? Or my short stint as a Domino's delivery driver?

So....question: If none of my previous jobs have ever had any importance to me, really, then should I even put them on the application?

please, for the sake of your application, leave the dominos delivery job off 🙂

What's wrong with listing it? It shows you worked while you were in school. If they see you have less ECs or somewhat lower GPA, but they see you've worked 20 hours a week since you were 16, I think that shows a lot of responsibility and character. They know that not everyone comes from well off families that can pay for their tuition. Some of us struggle and have to work at nights to get through school. I think they will respect that, even if it doesn't sound like the best job in the world. In the end, it's up to you, but I don't think listing it would hurt. Also, I believe the section says something like "Please list work experience in order of importance to you (limit 5). " It doesn't say to list jobs that have prepared you for an education in dentistry or anything. They just want to get a all around look at what you've done.

i think jobs pertaining to your major (career) that will help boost up your resume should only be listed on the application.

That's what I was thinking.

I disagree.

If you leave it off, it will show large gaps of time without work. Work, whether manual labor or health related, is a responsibility. I've met more than enough people in my life to know that a work ethic isn't exactly a given.

If it was truly a short stint (6 months or less) maybe you can leave it off, but showing that you work or that you work for a long haul at one job shows a certain level of commitment and responsibility.

Another example.

Military service. What does that have to do with healthcare or dentistry? But do you think they'd leave it off. What it does have to do with is responsibility and knowing the value of a dollar earned. When 5-10% (totally made up) of the kids who appply to dental school haven't worked a day in their lives besides studying for school...well...showing that you aren't one of those kids is a plus (IMO) in it of itself.

If you don't have 5 other jobs that are more important, put it on. Definitely. Work is work. My jobs have been totally random, but the adcoms like variety

Most of my interviews discussed my work history to some degree or another. They seemed to appreciate diverse life experiences and what I learned from it. It was more than just- I was broke and needed money. It was more of Dominos (yes I've worked at Dominos) is noone's dream job but it did give me a sense of where I wanted to go in life. All of my coworkers had career plans and took the job as a stop sign on their way to their goal. I worked hard for the pay and enjoyed the contact with some pretty tough and interesting customers...

I wouldn't prioritize it as the highest job in the realm but if you need to fill the space then fill it. Adcoms aren't going to look down on you for working foodservice. However, turn it into a positive if it comes up in an interview.

Did you learn anything at all while on the job? It's honest work. I think you should list it.

EDIT: JB, you got into NYU... CONGRATS!

i think any job experience can help...its shows responsibilty and time management

i think jobs like yours can be really helpful on an application if you emphasize the skills you've developed because of them. i've been waiting tables as a part-time job since high school and it's taught me a lot about humility, working with people, and dealing with the public, all of which are important lessons for a medical professional when it comes to interacting with patients. i listed it in my work experience section and mentioned it in my essay.

go for it. those jobs show that you're down to earth and willing to work hard in the service of others.

Yes, take some pride in the fact that you can handle working while going to school. Personally, I think the adcoms want to see that you can do more than one thing at a time. If I were a member of the adcom, and I had to make a decision between you and someone who mommy and daddy paid for their education and they never worked, I would choose you. Take some pride in the fact that you have accomplished all that you have...don't be embarrassed!

it shows diversity in my opinion. They want to see if you have had other worldly experiance. Test everything and hold on to what you like. I included my year of suck arse construction work and pizza delivery and made sure the schools knew I didn't want to ever do that again. I also included my science jobs and dental jobs. I also included the dntal jobs in my shadow hours and boosted thgose numbers up to 600 hours. Make yourself shine frineds.

spell check off.

Throw it on, it shows that you had to deal with all types of people, showing that you are a good people person and good communicator.

OK, where do I start?

I was a Customer Service Representative (CSR), Assistant Manager and I did deliveries, at Domino's Pizza, I basically did it ALL. The only thing I didn't do is actually make the dough and grow the food. I worked my tail off during undergrad and I don't regret none of my experiences. I was running the store at age 18, during my shift I had a variety of characters ranging from a 65 year-old-man to 16 year-old-high school student. IN between I had all types of ethnicities to interact with, I knew I would bust my butt to make sure I would use that job as a stepping stone.

Before that I worked at Einstein Bagel's washing dishes!

Before that I worked at Blockbuster Video as a CSR.

Before that I worked at Wheel World in the stock room, moving tires and 24" rims

So does every bit matter? Yes of course...put it on your application and if you need more help PM me.
