I am a 22 year old hispanic female..
received my B.A. in Psychology at UCLA GPA 3.42
Science GPA 3.55

Had a C- and D in Psych stats and Ochem, respectively. But I took them again and ended up with an A and B+. How bad will that look? 🙁

Comm service/experience/activities:

Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority ( 2 yrs)

National Honors Society (2 yrs)
-Secretary (1 year)

UCLA hospital volunteer for 2 quarters
Relay for Life Chair

-Shadowed optometrist for 2 months-patient interaction, did pre-testing, worked with optician
-100 hours of clinical experience
-Shadowed dermatologist for 3 months

-Sunday school teacher for 2 years
-Pomona Superior Court as Clerical Assistant as summer job (3 summers)
*Award
-Fed homeless for 2 years

I am a transfer student by the way..I transferred from Riverside Community College. Graduated with distinction from there.
I did horrible my first year at UCLA but after that year I got A's and B+ 's . I have gotten 2 C's in my sciences so i'm not sure if i'm allowed to make them up at a community college somehow?

I have not taken my MCATS yet..so how do I stand so far and what MCAT score would I absolutely need in order to be even remotely competitive for med school? Do i have a chance of getting into a U.S. med school?? And also, is it true that caribbean med schools are easy to get into? If I don't get into a U.S. one...i would accept that fact and go to a school like Ross or St. George. Do you think i have a shot at getting into those? and what are the setbacks if so?

I don't know how i will do on the interviews..i have SAD and i stutter but hopefully i can train myself to do well 🙂
Realized i wanted to be pre-med pretty late in the game (my junior year) so that's why my grades weren't so great in the beginning. I also am taking about a year off to work, shadow, obtain more clinical experience, and study for the MCAT..is that fine with med school admissions officers? I don't want them to think i'm being lax about anything.. I just had to work SO hard to raise my grades my last year that I didn't have time to do those things.

please please please help me out here..don't know whether I should give up on this aspiration..thank you all🙂

Any of the caribbean schools..UCSD, UCI, Chicago, or mount sinai would be great! But i'd like to get accepted ANYWHERE. Do i have a good chance?? Or should I just give up and do the PA program, optometry, etc..(my back-up choices)

You can get an idea of your chances by looking at this graphical representation of AAMC data for Hispanics applying over the last three years: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=11269888&highlight=Hispanic#post11269888

With a 3.42 cGPA, an MCAT score of 28 gave a 62% chance of an acceptance. A 30 gave ~70% chance. And a 32 gave ~76% odds. An upward grade trend is helpful, particularly in the sciences.

Your ECs look good.

What did you get the Cs in? And what are your plans for the next ~9 months while you study for the MCAT?

Bolded text + average grades (not horrible)+ your good ecs= success. You will do fine just score good on the mcat and you will have a excellent chance.

I got a C+ in Life Sciences 3 at UCLA and a C in molecular Biology at my community college. But i DID sort of make up for that by getting an A in my life sciences 4 (genetics) class at UCLA.

And during that time off I would be working and taking an MCAT course. I also need one more calculus class and an english class so i would probably take that at a nearby community college during that gap period as well.

and thanks guys 🙂 appreciate the input. my GPA is so low and that is my main concern.

I don't think you need to retake those classes, but it wouldn't hurt to take another upper-level Bio class and get an A. Maybe Microbiology, Physiology, Cell Biology, as examples, especially if your BCPM GPA didn't sky rocket the last year. With As in that plus Calc, your Postbac grades will show an upward grade trend.
