med schools have dorms? seriously? do you have to have roommates and group bathrooms/showers? is it only med students in your dorms or will their be freshman next door?

as for what to bring, well, bring what makes you feel at home. for school what you need is pretty boring and dependant on your study style. notebooks, paper, pens, highlighters... pretty much what you'd expect to need.

maybe get a plasma TV, you know, to maximize space. 😀

Yes, some med sch's have dorms. Among these are WashU, Mt Sinai, Yale, Cornell, and i'm not quite so sure what other places. At my soon-to-be school, we share the dorm building with allied health students.

Thank you for you input. I agree with the notebooks, paper, pens and highlighters. I'm not disciplined enough, however, to keep a plasma tv in my room and not watch it.

Does anyone have an opinion on refrigerators with locks, rice cookers/ george foreman grills, or the like?

why do you need a refrigerator with a lock?

get a hot pot / kettle. and instead of bringing all this stuff down, you could buy it on amazon and get it shipped to you (if you don't already have it). amazon has everything.

i don't think you need a fridge with a lock. if people are going to steal, they could probably find something better than your beer. need a microwave. grills are usually prohibited.

the hotpot is a good idea though, useful for lots of stuff. take some paper plates and plastic silverware unless you want to wash dishes in the bathroom sink. if the floors in your rooms are tile, get the dimensions of the room and get go buy a piece of carpet in the same dimensions. put the carpet down before all your other stuff. it's definately worth it.

might also invest in some double sided tape for hanging posters and stuff.

Yep, the lock sounds weird. Presumably, you'll trust your roommate enough to share the fridge. Are you going to have a roommate? If so, contact him/her to divide up geting stuff. The generals are a fridge, microwave, coffee maker. If you have communal bathrooms, you'll also want to the classic dorm shower bucket, and a robe is always good.

I've got to admit that I'm glad I'm not going to a school with a dorm because that seems to reinforce the idea that all students are 21 and single. I don't think my husband and cats would dig moving into a 300 (if that) square foot dorm room. Also, do you feel like you're somehow outside of the basic campus culture if you don't live in the dorms? If most students do the dorm thing, I think that'd definitely be a problem.

That depends on how hot your roomate was.

As far as missing out on the culture by being off campus -- yes, you probably do end up not getting into as many study groups and do miss out on a lot of shared notes/info, let alone a whole social scene. But nontrads tend to bond and do okay without all this. And you get to avoid a lot of the pretest anxiety that permeates throughout the student housing.

Hi there,
Things that I found necessary for the "Dorm" (actually it was gradate housing on campus).

A bed rest for the bed so that I could read in bed.
A very strong floor lamp for reading with a very bright bulb.
Book shelves from IKEA (you can have these shipped and put them together).
A good bed with a good mattress set (three sets of sheets, a down comforter, at least four very soft pillows). (You can have the bed delivered too).
A WaterPik shower head that delivers a needle-sharp spray (for getting up and going in the morning).
My own coffee maker (two-cup variety) so I could get out the door with a hot cup of joe in hand)
My music equipment with noise-cancelling head phones so I could have a peaceful environment (the Ipod works well for this and you can use it in the library).

Things I purchased when I got there:
Pots and pans as needed.
Food that I just liked keeping around (mostly Power Bars and fruit).
A small refridgerator (you don't need the lock)
Roach spray
Cleaning supplies (KaBoom for the bathroom and assorted sponges, Clorox)
A laundry basket.
A change jar for quarters for the washer and dryer
A very large white board with dry erase markers for writing down important dates and concept mapping.
A motion alarm for my laptop computer.

You are likely going to be using your room for sleep and shower. The library or one of the empty classrooms will be a better study option.

A motion alarm for your laptop? What's that?

Thanks for the ideas!

Hi there,
It's an ear-piercing shreiking alarm that sounds when your laptop is moved without disabling it. You have to know the code to silence it. Laptops tend not to walk when attached to these things.

Invest in some 'downy wrinkle release' spray: saves lots of time on ironing.

come on guys, don't you remember college? it's not like living as a medical student will be any different...if anything, you probably can't afford to buy as many cool things to bring to school.

Condoms. Lots and lots of condoms.

God.. Some of you act like you were total outkast premeds during undergrad..

Didn't you have to interact with roommates? Why the hell would you put a lock on your fridge..? If your roommate takes some milk.. Oh well.. If he continues to do it and you are terriorital.. ask them to respect your stuff..

lol.. locking a fridge up.. what kinda freak are you?

motion sensor laptop alarm? you realize all laptops have a built-in re-enforced loophole for a simple $10 cable which you can attach to anything. Why spend extra cash for a stupid high tech sensor that has the possibility of shreeking in the library if you forget to disable it..

I think the MCAT should have another PS section.. Personal Skills.. and the AMCAS should have you send in recommendations of at least 5 friends that say you are normal, have partied at some point in your life, and believe you can function in society..

I second that. Lots of hooking up with classmates eh?

I can't think of anything you'd need for a med school dorm that you didn't need for an undergrad dorm. Hot pot, microwave, and probably some pots and pans, I guess - I used those in undergrad but I know lots of people just got the meal plan. You'll definitely want to be able to fix yourself at least some food.

Other than that, it shouldn't be much different in terms of necessary supplies.

I have two things left over from my dorm days that I still use regularly, despite having been living in apartments for three years:
1. hot pot - it boils water way faster than the stove. It's also an excellent way to steam artichokes. I might keep it until I die. (Hopefully, I won't die in a hot-pot-started fire... they're serious about these being a fire hazard.)
2. "magic scissors" - my aunt got me these for high school graduation from the home shopping network. 7 years later, the blades are pretty dull but the bottle opener, can-poking thingy, and grippy thing for opening jars still work! So does the vegetable peeler, but I have a real one now.

Ahhh, man. My laptop doesn't have the loop thing. I think that the alarm is pretty cool. It's a lot more applicable than a car alarm. At least in the library, you can come running when the alarm goes off and catch those bandits red-handed. Justice is sweet!

Hi there,
A good pair of wire cutters and that cable is history. Laptops without motion sensors walk quite often out of the library. Believe me, when folks see your motion alarm, they give your stuff a wide berth. If they don't see it, they hear it and your stuff is still safe. We kept little cards that said "Caution: motion detector in use" so our stuff stayed safe when we left it.
