Hello, my question is this. How hard would it be for a DO dr to get into any of these residencies? FP, EM, IM, OB/GYN??? ANy input will be appreciated....

Eduardo

FP - piece of cake
EM - tough for anyone, but all competitive folks would have a good shot
IM - easy to get a position. Some programs are more competitive than others
OB/GYN - have their own DO residencies; but competitive applicants would be looked at everywhere.

something important to keep in mind is one of the big advantages of being a D.O.! in addition to all the allopathic residencies available to you, you have a whole extra world of osteopathic residencies to choose from! so depending on what type of PG program you are looking into, there are always several options as a D.O.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys. Another question, residents are payed a certain amount, do DO schools pay around the same? or whats the diffrence...and the big question. Once you are done with residency and start working, do MDs earn more than DOs? lets say they are both FP and starting the same time ? or are they payed the same?

i don't know anything about DO residencies specifically..however, most hospitals have standard payscales for all housestaff, irrespective of degree & training program...i don't know of any strictly DO institutions, so i would imagine pay during training is miserably similar whereever you go 😉

in terms of post residency, i think you would make the same. i am md, but know several DOs in different practice styles. one is academic fp, making the same as his colleagues (academics pay is somewhat less than "real world".) then i know a DO in private practice who, and i quote, "I don't know what to do with all the money I am pulling in." Oddly, he won't give me any, but that's a different story....

As long as you make the right contracts, and see enough patients, maybe throw in some procedures, MD/DO...no difference.

For DO's getting allopathic residencies, it all depends on how many people with an MD go into that field in the year that you match. Many Internal Med programs don't fill, so of course you have an excellent shot there, same with FP. EM has been very competitive lately, but there are still lots of programs so extremely competitive DO students have a shot there. OB/GYN is hard to predict, since the popularity of the field will likely be declining in the next several years unless there is major malpractice insurance reform.

As long as you are a good applicant, a DO should not have any trouble finding a spot in an MD EM residency.
