I'm an OMS1 looking towards Anesthesiology. I noticed that there is a surprisingly high number of DO's matching into this specialty (see attached pic, taken from http://www.nrmp.org/data/resultsanddata2012.pdf ).

I was talking with a friend of mine about this, and he said that it was because DOs are going into Internal Med residencies first, then applying to Anesthesiology when they're finished, thus counting in the match. Is this true? Is it unlikely that I'd be able to match directly into Anesth right out of OMS4? I would be pretty upset if so...

I would say your friend needs to not give advice on subjects they do not know about. There are plenty of DO students going straight into anesthesiology. It probably is a bit more competitive if your a middle of the road DO candidate or worse. Make sure you take the USMLE to be on a more level playing field. There may be some doing IM and then doing anesthesiology, butt there are also allopathic people doing that as well. I have not seen that as a trend for DO candidates.
Your goal should be top 1/4 of your class and 230 or greater on USMLE to make your life easier. You can still get in without those stats, but it gets more challenging. The unchecked proliferation of osteopathic schools around the country is not going to make it any easier as residency positions get harder to find for osteopathic and allopathic candidates.

I agree with the above; this source of yours is mostly clueless. Plenty of DOs are matching out of school.

Thank you sirs, that's great to hear. My friend is quite the gunner, I should have known.

I have nothing of substance to add to the excellent response above except to say - when I was a DO student, there was an endless cascade of excuses for why this, that or the other thing could not be done or would pose massive challenges because I was a DO student vs. an MD student. However, I found that reality was far far different...even further, it finally hit me - people who afraid to chase their dreams frequently use "I am a DO/DO student" as an easy & convenient excuse for not pursuing their aspirations. It saves face to blame **** on externalities instead of bellying up to the bar and admitting they were psyhed out.
