(not a DO vs. MD)

Maybe I am just naive in asking this because I dont have a clue into the dynamics behind choosing a specialty but in doing some research I found that a very small percentage of DO's enter pediatrics. Why is this so?? I am asking because I am definitely interested in pursuing this track (yes I know chances are I'll change my mind in med school). Thanks for any info...

what type of research did you do? and what were the figures you encountered?

(this way, we can tackle any errors and misconceptions that the source may have provided, OR confirm the figures)

actually most DO's enter primary care specialties, peds being one of them. peds is probably as DO friendly as you can get, so your question is a little confusing.

Sorry guys, I cant remember the exact sources of my info but I know that this is something that came to my attention right away. I know that many DO's do enter primary care med but it just seemed to me that numbers wise there was a small percentage entering pediatrics. Also, im from miami so the percentages may be skewed just because of the small number of DO's in miami period. Sorry if my info is off,... I was just curious, thanks

As a do in peds, I am not entirely sure on the exact statistics, but I do know that there are very few do pediatric spots for residency as compared to md spots. I know for this reason that many do students choose to enter md residencies when compared to do ones. There are many options for you whether you choose to go primary care vs specialty. You may choose either and be succesful at it. I would only recommend that you find a good mentor that can help guide you in the path of pediatrics trainings. If you are in miami, you definitely have good number of attendings that can help you. Good luck to you all

I saw this in one of AOA's publication. Most DOs enter primary care, but the number that entered Pediatrics was very low.
