Hi guys, I'm in a bit of a precarious situation here. I've been thinking about being a DPT but my undergrad years are haunting me. I have a BA in Psych with a 2.55 gpa. That 2.55 is a big problem but I'm planning to spend the next 2 years taking prereqs and doing well on them. I may not save my cumulative but I can still do something about my postbac gpa.

Hopefully in two years, my last 60 unit gpa will be above a 3.5. But this still rules out most of the programs out there as they have a 3.0 cumulative limit. So I'm looking at programs that are more forgiving, ones that only count your last 60. Within CA, I only know of Western. They count your last 60 if your overall is below 2.85. Then some of the CSUs like CSULB and CSU Sacramento and CSUF do it too or they would only count your prereq gpa, but they're MPT only programs.

So I'm in a dangerous spot because I could spent two years taking prereq courses, boosting my gpa, and all this work to get into a PT program but I can only apply to a few schools. I don't want to do all that work to get rejected by all 3 or 4 of my schools.

Would it be wise to still go on if I know I can only apply to a few schools in the end? Would I have a good chance of getting into one of them? Are there other programs out there that would be as forgiving as these schools I've mentioned? I'm even open to out of state options as a last ditch effort.

Thanks!

University of Missouri at Columbia has what they call a freshman forgiveness criteria. They only count the last 60 hours but I'm not sure if they count post bac hours as part of the 60. It's a state school so tuition is lower than private schools. The don't use PTCAS so the application pool is lower, this year it was about 150. It's a long way from CA but if you're passionate enough, it might be worth a try.

The following is from University of Central Arkansas' DPT brochure:🙂

"Grade Point Averages for recent course work (30 semester hours or 45 quarter
hours): The GPA for recent course work may be considered by the DPT Admissions
Committee as a substitute for the cumulative GPA for admission purposes only. The
substitution may be made if the GPA for the last 30 semester hours (45 quarter hour
equivalent) is at least 10% higher than the cumulative GPA and includes 15 hours of
appropriate science course work. A minimal 2.75 cumulative GPA requirement and a
minimal 3.00 science GPA requirement must be met prior to utilizing this option. No
more than 8 hours of the science course work may be repeated course work. The
total hours for the recent college GPA are obtained by beginning with the last
semester or quarter of course work and moving backwards chronologically on the
transcript(s) until 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hour equivalents are obtained. All
courses are included. No more than one-fourth of the non-science course work
included in the recent course work GPA may be repeated course work. All other
requirements still apply."
