That's exactly how I am!! That's why I'm shadowing this summer, hopefully I'll have a better idea once I get off SDN and into the ER and dental offices 👍

I shadowed everywhere. I like a Dentist office, however I don't want to feel like i'm working to live. I want my work to have a sort of passion to it, like to the point where I am absolutely enthralled by my work that I don't mind if I work 12 hours a day from 6-6.

I shadowed some internist, and a neurologist as well as a surgeon and I really liked being with the neurologist. I also shadowed a Pharmacist and a Podiatrist. I didn't like Pharmacy, but I really liked the diversity in podiatry. He saw some Pre-Op patients, some Post-Op, and he did some wound care, in office procedures, injections, diagnoses, orthotics, skin disorders, reviewed some x-rays and some other things in one day. I really really liked the variety as well as the diversity of patients from an age perspective. Podiatry was the most interesting to me. When I shadowed the Orthopedic Surgeon, there was no in office procedures and he works crazy hours. It was only Pre-Operation and Post-Operation patients which was pretty dull as well as a few x-rays.

My favorite out of all of them was Dentistry and Podiatry, with Neurology coming in 3rd and Pharmacy coming dead last.

I think thats why most people lean toward Poidatry, lots of diversity with autonomy and pretty low requirements due to low public awareness...

There is a dentist here who takes a whole week off every month and he travels to different locations around the world.

Maybe I can find the post, but that is an envious life.

You could always become a dentist and just work more than most dentists. It wouldn't hurt.

i'm jealous too... How about we both agree to become dentists and i move up there and we open a practice, eh? 😉

I think it would defeat the "lifestyle" purpose of going into dentistry, however that is a valid point. Oh, and apparently I hear that it actually hurts a lot when a Dentist is in a working position for more than the "8-4" time period 😎 Don't know if it's true or they are justifying their relatively short hours....

Dang, why was Pharmacy so bad?!

Well first of all, it is very monotonous. I have ADHD and I hate these quiet settings doing the same thing every day. At least in the dental office there was SOME variety but with Pharmacy it was very very boring to watch. Not as boring to do but definitely still not exciting.

Also the job market is pretty bad too..... My neighbor is a pharmacist and she hasn't found a job in 7 months.

And another thing, people don't like podiatry because they don't like early specialization, they don't get paid as much as a lot of MD specialties, and they have a DPM degree. Oh, and the "feet" stigma.
