I'm just starting medical school but am quite confident as a former fashionista, I would say yes as long as your color palette matches and everything is tailored nicely. I received several complements on my 3 piece suit/tie/shoe combo during my med school interviews and wore dressy Chelsea style boots much like the ones in the photo.

I went through a bunch of residency interviews and PDs tend to be very conservative. I suggest dressing so that you do NOT stand out in any way, whichever it may be. No next level fashion clothing, etc. For guys I suggest a well tailored conservative suit and appropriate shoes. Your goal is to NOT stand out in any way fashion-wise during residency interviews.

Those are completely fine and I saw plenty of them on the interview trail. Saw plenty of flashy stuff like wing tips, etc, as well.

As a note, many residency interviews tell you to wear comfortable shoes, because some involve tours that are over an hour long, including outside portions. You may be walking in the rain or snow. I wore suede shoes for most interviews which worked out great. I don't think anyone interviewing you will actually see your shoes, anyway, so I'd worry more about making sure the coat/shirt/tie combo works.

why do people want to actively take risks with their future on wearing their fancy shoes. I will never understand it

I don’t see why y’all are freaking out about “risky shoes”...it’s a brown shoe. No one is examining the shoe to see how high the sides go or if it has a slightly unusual cut.

Now don’t go being the girl at my med school interview who wore a gold-trimmed white suit or the guy with a wooden bow-tie, but shy of that I don’t see anyone reading that deeply into it.

As someone who likes to dress nice, I think getting worked up over residency interview attire is way overblown. It's not that important at all. The interviews are ridiculously fast paced and your day is packed. Not a single interviewer will care if you're wearing wing tips or an Oxford or those boots. As long as it not something ridiculous like alligator boots or snake skin.

With that said, the above shoe, is in my opinion the best looking dress shoe, although black is an abysmally boring color. I had a navy suit with light brown cap toe oxfords. It's the way to go.

Bottom line: do not give anyone a reason to think you’re a doofus during an interview. Just go the safe route and wear a suit with conservative suit and dress shoes. Women have a little more leeway with fashion but should dress conservatively as well.

Once you’re accepted you can wear fruity boots to your heart’s content.
