How does this effect Drexel students? Hahnemann University Hospital to be closed
How does this effect Drexel students? Hahnemann University Hospital to be closed
Unclear exactly. They said they have clinical sites to accomodate everyone either way.
“If Freedman closes Hahnemann abruptly or without authority, the lawsuit says, “there would be potentially catastrophic consequences for patients, Drexel, the hospital’s residents, Drexel University College of Medicine students and faculty, and the community at large.”

Drexel sues to block threatened closure of Hahnemann University Hospital
The lawsuit sharpens the fight over the future of Hahnemann and its parent, American Academic Health System, which laid off 175 in April in a bid to conserve cash.www.inquirer.com

This California banker bet on turning around Philly’s Hahnemann Hospital. He’s running out of time.
Chief executive Joel Freedman thought his experience with safety-net hospitals near Los Angeles and in Washington would help him with a turnaround at Hahnemann. It hasn’t so far.www.inquirer.com
Yeah I’ve seen the articles. That lawsuit was tossed on Tuesday.
But we’ve also had a meeting with our deans and clinical education... nothing “catastrophic” is happening with the medical students.
Meh. Sucks for everyone who needed LORs or are applying to a competitive specialty.
They might have rotation sites but they certainly wont be of the same quality.

There are students who spend their entire third year in Pittsburgh and at least when I was there at Monmouth.
I spent most of my Medicine rotation in Harrisburg and a large part of my Surgery rotation in NJ.
They’ll be fine.
More people complained about crappy experiences at HUH than anywhere else
I did OB at HUH and it suuuuuuucked.

Monmouth isnt a site anymore. We just lost Kaiser too.
But i did an all year for M3. I thoroughly enjoyed the site and learned a lot. No regrets.
That’s unfortunate. I liked it there (Monmouth)
Had a lot of buddies who rotated at AGH and thought it was a great experience.
I get that, but you lose your options for things like nsg ortho or ophtho right?
Rutgers took over Monmouth, unfortunately.
The people i know who were at AGH had great experiences as well.
AGH is a solid clinical site. I rotated with a lot of Drexel and Temple students when I was there. If you guys expand numbers there you might displace the LECOM students. No matter how you look at it Hahnemann closing is going to have big effects on at least a few med schools in PA.
Oh, absolutely. Our other sites like Abington (Jeff, Temple, PCOM), Crozer (Jeff at the very least), York (again Jeff).. and then St Chris (Temple and PCOM) just as a few examples. Everyone is going to feel a squeeze. Jeff has a bigger class than we do and they have students to place as well. It is a mess
It felt like Jeff students were everywhere. Bumped into them near Pittsburgh, random rural PA, Upstate NY. The whole state is saturated with med students. How many students had Hahnemann as a primary clinical campus?
What will happen to the residents at this place? Will ACGME help?
Maybe, but working at HUH was one of the core experiences that most (not all) students shared. It was part of the character of the school that you generally spent time in an inner city hospital caring for Philadelphia’s most vulnerable. HUH was an actual and psychosocial war zone, which I mean in the most noble way. I think that the loss is pretty tragic from that perspective. My experiences there were not always the most fun but I think they were all some of my most formative experiences.More people complained about crappy experiences at HUH than anywhere else

That said, I agree that future students will be fine and get good training. I do think that something significant has been lost with HUH closing but, at the end of the day, it probably will not play a huge role in the quality of Doctor one becomes after attending this school.
St Chris gives you this perspective too.
As I understand it, if categorical residents are in a program that shuts down, they still have funding that will follow them wherever they go. So they need to find an accepting program, but they are covered financially.
Here are a few examples of how it impacts us students
1) About to be the whole year outside Philly when I requested to stay in Philly
2) Internet sucks at ALL of the sites (UWORLD pictures and audio not showing)
3) Prison sized dorms can have 2 students in each room
4) Drexel staff lie to you and act like they have your best interest at heart ("we will work with you" turns into "you have no choice, this is all we have")
5) Drexel is not telling the full truth about how much Hahnemann closure is impacting us students
6) When living at sites in 3rd year, most spots do not allow you to move in until the day you start rotations
What exactly is my 60k going towards this year?
I am actually annoyed for you guys about this, it has been coming up on EVERY interview. Also it’s been super annoying to be asked about it in interviews constantly...

I don’t go to school anywhere near Drexel and PDs still frequently bring up Hahnemann as an example of what could happen if a hospital isn’t financially stable, I can only imagine how many questions Drexel students get.
A ton. Every interview.. except at Drexel’s FM program lol
What's the current status of rotations there? Because i heard it got even more difficult and the admin wasn't really helpful?
