I posted this post before but am having trouble with the link

Where is everyone living? I'm looking into off-campus, any good neighborhoods you can recommend? also, would it be safe to be living alone (esp being a girl). not sure how "ghetto" philly is, esp around drexel/upenn.

I just decided I'm going to drexel as well. I have the same questions about housing. I know nothing about philly or the area, any advice would be greatly appreciated. anyone??

i'm attending drexel in september but for the MPH program. i decided to live at stiles hall (the graduate housing) because i'm moving from california and i'm not really familiar with the philly area. 🙂

One thing you should keep in mind is that Drexel's post-bacc programs are the Center City campus, which is not the same as the regular Drexel campus in University City (which is near UPenn). Center City is pretty safe (I'm a girl, and I live there alone), but that isn't to say you shouldn't be cautious. I live in a building that's two blocks away from where the post-bacc classes are. Some friends of mine live in Stiles, or in other close apartments. PM me if you'd like details or have any questions! 😉

one reason why i dont want to consider stiles is someone posted that their rooms are super small. i dont know if i can handle that.

ophelia, do you know how much a 1br in your area goes for? i'm looking for a good price range (650 or below)

I'm moving to Philly from California, too. I've been calling around for apts at Philly, but most of them doenst have openings till mid august. Do any of you know if there's an apt (1 bedroom or studio) available on 8/1? thanks.

btw, wut programs did u guys get accepted to?

most of the landlords i've contacted via phone seem to want to meet the tenants first before signing the lease. but i can't get out to philly before the last week of july...if done that way (go a few days before the program starts to look for housing) where would you leave you stuff while you go apt hunting?

i'm in the IMS program. how bout you?

Craigslist.com is a great resource for finding housing. However, I still don't have a place either! It's really hard to gauge what places are good and what places aren't online. I thought I was going to live in Stiles, but I thought it was furnished...and it's not. The rooms are 100-150 sq feet! That is tinnnnny, especially if you wanted to put a bigger bed in there. The web site below is a good resource too.

The Metropolitan came highly recommended to me and I just signed a lease there. It's only a block away from where MSP/IMS classes are held. However, it's a little spendy. Check out www.historiclandmarks.com to see what they have available.

wow, the metropolitan IS really pricy. Is there any next best thing? Thanks 🙂

I found four apartments that are a pretty good price- The Claremont, Clinton Place, The Arts Tower, and Westminster Arch. All are very close to campus...I mapquested them all, and they were within 5 min. They range from $550-660...three of them have utilities included.... I haven't talked to anyone yet though... I wish I could see the area more...

hope that helps

You do know that 650 is not reasonable in center city! That is downtown of a big city. You may be able to find a studio for around $750 at the lowest.

I am living on campus b/c I will not have a car (so I cant live outside of the city) and all the housing near UPenn and Center City is too dang expensive.

good luck finding something

actually, on craigslist, i found several apt available for that amount or lower so it is apparently possible

cheapest studios are $550 and are crapholes. That is in a good area as well. You need to watch what areas people are trying to sell you in.

You could always buddy up with someone on SDN as roommates  😉

Stiles Hall here I come....yeah I know its tiny but everything is included and it is pretty cheap and headache free, and since Im moving from California it makes life a lot easier....good luck everyone and see you August 1st!! 🙂

WHERE 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 ?
Are they in center city and in a good area?
What are the names of the apt complexes

go to philadelphia.craigslist.org
under apt/housing (top center of webpage)--->and then type "center city" or whatever area of the city you're looking for

again, i'm not from the area so i'm not sure exactly how "safe" the area around our class is. i've heard that hahnemann isn't that great of a place to live....some have said it's a bit shady.

look with caution!!

hello fellow Drexelers!

i just got accepted to the IMS program and now i want to find housing. like some of you, i live very far away (CA) and I won't be able to start looking until next week when I visit for the orientation.

i would like to find a 2 bedroom apt to share with a roommate. right now i'll search for places online, but it won't be of much use until i actually check out the places in person. if any of you are interested, maybe we can meet up before/after the orientation to look at places together.

😱
^that smilie is so funny!

i've been looking for an apt as well.

Its so hard to find anything under 700 (maybe i'm being too unreasonable).

I hope I can find one before school starts. Have you guys recieved any infor on the orientation?

on monday the orientation is only a couple of hours in the afternoon, and the rest of the week it's all day. on monday they will have a housing seminar too

Would you be interested in living in East Falls? The place in question is only about a block away from the Drexel Med (Queen Lane) campus, so taking the shuttle to Hahnemann would be pretty easy. The rent would be significantly lower than Center City as well.

yeah, i'm actually looking for places there too. i dont want to decide on anything without visiting each place in person though. are you living in that area?

I will be. I did IMS last year and am now living in Center City, but I need to move closer to the Queen Lane campus. There are mostly 2-bedrooms available in that area at this point, so I would need a roommate.

hey guys,

i'm here at the drexel library. housing wasn't too hard to find. i found a place on chestnut and 12th through craigslist and it seems like there's a lot of places around center city that are decent (both price and area) if you're willing to do a little research. i think i should have found a place in EAST FALLS or ROXBOROUGH (if i wasn't so rushed, since the shuttle is available) but for now this will do.

it's funny that someone earlier this morning logged onto this website. hehe

see ya'll in a few days!!!!

Hey,
I'm looking for roomies too! A little bit about myself: 25, male, clean and neat, graduated from UC Irvine, want to spend anywhere from $400-600 for my own room. I'm in the Drexel bio-medical program too and my classes are in the Center City campus. PM me back if you're interested; I'm currently living in Orange County. Thanks. PS, I'm looking to room with people that are studious but still kewl and laid back...you know, just normal people....

Hi everyone

I am an Advanced Standing DMD student at Penn Dental School. I have finished dental school in India and worked in my dad's office for a year. In order to get a license here,we have to get a DDS/DMD degree. On the basis of my foreign dental degree I join directly at the 3rd year. The majority of my 2 years will be spent in treating patients.

If any of you need dental treatment at any point of time or know any one who does, you are most welcome to contact me.

Oh dude, don't live in The Arts Tower. It's in "The Gayborhood" and I'm not talking your usual trendy, coffee shop-laden gay neighborhood of San Francisco. The building is crap and you pay for a ton of stuff you don't get. Don't be fooled by the nice-looking lobby. They have 24 hour consierge, but they do nothing and they let anyone in, and the apartment right next to mine was broken into and robbed.

What's funny is its just that those couple blocks on that side of Broad Street - the 11th, 12th, and 13th blocks of Locust (Arts Tower is on the 13th block, right off broad) are really the only crappy areas in Center City, so the rent's going to be cheap. It is convienent, about a 20 minute walk to class, but if you get a window in the front of the building, its loud as hell. The gay clubs close and there are people all over the block just screaming until like 4AM when the weather is warm enough. And there's a crack house a block away on 12th and they openly deal right there on the open. I should know, I used to live there. It doesn't look bad in the day time, so don't let that fool you. If you go across broad, rent really jumps up and its really nice over there. The rooms have terrible carpets and are about 10 x 14. My toilet flooded a few times, and the elevators always break down. Your money also goes to 24 hour maintenance who are on call but are reluctant to show up, even for a flooded toilet I had to fight with the jerk on the phone. Just a warning, don't live there. You are a lot better off going through the Philly Weekly's adds (google Philly Weekly) and finding a place. If you find a place for under 700, there's a reason its that low - its a hole. I found a great place about 4 times the size in a great area about 9 blocks away near Rittenhouse Square for $775, and thats only 75 more than my place was at the Arts Tower.
